There are posters here that are very passionate about their music. You criticize music tastes yet are vague about what you like and why. Here is an opportunity to help make sense of the musical opinions that exist within this place, so fire away. Please stay away from "I like all types of music" because we all have a song in an opera that we can tolerate, but it doesn't mean that we are opera fans (sorry basso ). Gospel would be my music of choice because it embodies all that I grew up with musically. Nice melodies, intricate arrangements and versatile vocals. However, I am disturbed by the way the gospel choir is depicted in the media. Gospel choirs are rarely that black, energetic, color coordinated or choreographed.
I like a lot of different kinds of music. It is probably easier for me to list what I don't like than what I do (opera, avante garde jazz, nu country are a few). But, the stuff I really like would have to go like this: 1. Rock/Pop - anything from classic rock to pop to heavy metal. It was my first love and always has been. It's a broad category, but I'd say if it is between the Beatles and Metallica, it fits the category. 2. Traditional Jazz - I like to listen to fusion on occassion for musical appreciation, but give me be bop or a good big band any day for listening enjoyment. There are few things better than great jazz. 3. Latin - Great salsa or Afro-Cuban music is hard to dislike. Although, I'm not a fan of traditional Mariachi or Tejano, pretty much everything else from Brazilian-inspired bossa nova to Cuban salsa is on my list. There probably isn't anything that gets me tapping my foot like great Latin music. 4. Old Skool R&B - Motown, Atlantic Rhythm and Blues, Stax, etc. Aretha, Smokey, Marvin, the Temps...man, sometimes I feel like I (with a nod to Steve Martin) should have been born a poor black child. There is quite a range of other stuff I like including blues, funk, folk, some country, some electronia and rap/hip hop. But, the four above or the one's that are my true favorites.
My favorite type of music is melancholy music: Stuff that's miserable, quiet and low. I guess I like it because there's so much music that taps other emotions (happiness, love, anger, etc.) but tapping the "miserable" mood seems difficult for musicians to achieve. This kind of music is also hard to find. I like blues a lot. Blues taps that miserable mood well. I like many hymns (some gospel, and others which aren't). Such as 'Just a Closer Walk With Thee' and 'How Great Thou Art'. Don't know why - I guess it's because of their attractive melodies. Having a good melody really makes a song attractive. I like just about any classical piece that has a good melody (see above). I like almost anything that's played on a piano. don't like rap much any more. I guess I liked it back before it got so tough. Actually, as a kid, the first record I ever bought was 'Rapper's Delight' by the Sugar Hill Gang. Old school rap is okay, I guess, but I haven't heard good rap in a long time. don't like R&B at all don't like country much (some old country, maybe. Not this rock-a-billy stuff). don't like pop. Just about anything on a modern radio sounds aweful too me (I sound so old when I say that!) don't like jazz. I think it's really trendy to like jazz, but I just don't. don't like most techno. (too repetitive) -- droxford
I have listen to all types of music through out my life. When I was a younger man, Rock & Roll and Motown artists was all I listen to (grew up with teenage sisters and brothers in the seventees). Now I have learned how to appreciate music and musicians, now that my son and I both play guitar and my daughter plays the piano. I like music that you can actually hear all of the instruments and the lyrics are creative. Todays music is bad. I havent really been able to get into this Blink 182 crap or New Found Glory stuff. My kids listen to it and I cant play it in my vehicle. They usually like their mom to drive them around. Because in Daddys truck they have to listen to Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Porcupine Tree, Shane Bernard (Christian music), and lately I have been listening to some Brazilian Samba type music getting ready for my Brazil trip.
What he said. I'm not as skilled or as knowledgeable about music as Jeff is, but our tastes are similar. I really dug east coast rap when it was in its younger days, as well. Tribe Called Quest especially. great sampling...smart lyrics. i miss that style of rap.
trance, reggae, zydeco - I guess I'm screwed up that way. Trance because I've always liked dance and trance sorta fits my moods. Reggae because I enjoy the island atmosphere and love hearing about ganja and the Rastaman. Zydeco because you can't help but to start tapping your feet when you hear a good band whipping out some zydeco (ala Beau Jocque (RIP)).
My tastes in music change quite often. Growing up my family listened to country - Kenny Rodgers, Anne Murray, Geroge Jones, Lorretta Lynn, Johnny Cash and Willie. I don't like new country, but I'll listen to them any day. Early in High School I loved Pink Floyd and the Doors. Thats what my friends listened to, I don't listen to them much anymore, but I do watch Live at Pompeii every now and then. I then went to the blues - John Lee Hooker, BB King, Etta James, Howlin Wolf, SRV and Muddy Waters - I was fortunate enough to see the Benson and Hedges Blues Fest at the Summit many years ago. I was turned on to the blues from that point on. BB King Live at San Quentin has always been one of my favorite albums. When he sings "Nobody loves me but my mother", it's the best it can be. In college, I Dj'd for money and was the new music director of our college radio station. When I found out how many different kinds of music were out there I really dove into every different genre. I really got into jazz and lounge too. Recently I discovered 60's German, Spanish, and Italian movie scores - They are similar to the Ultra Lounge stuff. My main stays would be: Johnny Cash Live Sammy Davis Jr. Marvin Gaye John Lee Hooker Live BB King Smashing Pumpkins Pixies Ennio Morricone Prince Bob Marley I don't listen to much classical or opera.
I was a music major in college so I like all kinds of music. Really tough to put my finger on what I like. What I DON'T like is: -Current rap/hip-hop. I love the old school, but todays is CRAP. -nu metal -punk pop I guess here's what I like. 1. Late 70's and 80's rock and pop- The Police, Rush, U2, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, all these bands put out their best material in this time period. 2. Nerd Rock- Weezer, Ben Folds Five 3. 70's Funk- Earth Wind and Fire, The Commodores, Kool and the Gang, George Clinton, Rick James, The Gap Band, Chic etc. I predict this music will make a comeback, if it hasn't already. 4. Fusion- Chick Corea Electrik Band, The Rippingtons, etc 5. 70's Corporate Rock- Journey, Styx, Supertramp, Foreigner, Cheap Trick (not really corporate rock) etc. Didn't list any traditional jazz or classical because I like it all.
Hmmm... mine is pretty close to Jeff's there... (still not into Avril though, but I'll cut you some slack since you play a fretless bass... ) (and yes, I too should have been born a poor black child like Navin R Johnson ) 1) The old soul, R&B, Stax, blues, Motown is tops for me... Otis, Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Eddie Floyd, Albert King, William Bell, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, Marvin, Booker T, and on and on... and I know it's usually considered a different genre, but the 60s and 70s funk rates up there pretty highly too... and there's just too many blues guys to list in here. 2) Jazz... everything from the early Duke, Basie, and other big bands, through bebop and "hard bop" (although I've never been into much of the California "cool jazz" outside of some of Miles' stuff from that era), but my favorite has to be some of the Mingus and Coltrane stuff from the 60s. I can get into some of the avant-garde jazz... but seems like most of the stuff outside of Eric Dolphy and Ornette can grate on me a bit. Not too big on fusion, and although I've given some of the more modern 80s, 90s, and more current stuff a listen... I always tend to go back to the 60s. 3) Rock... hard rock, alternative, blues, old metal... anything from Beatles to Sabbath to Pixies to Sleater-Kinney to old Metallica... far too many to list here. (edit: oh yeah, and why? With the rock, alternative, metal, etc., I was a weird little punk kid in 6th and 7th grade... I wanted to rock... picked up the electric bass, spiked my hair, and never looked back... over the last 18 years though, I mellowed out, got more into the music of the 60s, took up the upright bass and more recently a nice Rickenbacker 360 guitar... the music I've been listening to for the last 10 years still makes my neck-hairs stand on end every time I listen to it, and I guess I don't know how else to explain it...)
1. Dave Matthews Band-I love the music, the lyrics, and the energy they put into their shows. I've seen them 17 times now, and I've been more and more excited before each show. 2. U2-Not much to add here. The only other band that can get me excited like DMB. 3. For lack of a better term, jam bands-I don't think they all fall into the same genre, but my favorite music is perfectly highlighted by the lineup at the Bonnaroo Music Fesitval-moe., Widespread Panic, Govt. Mule, Jason Mraz, The Dead, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Disco Biscuits, Mofro, Sonic Youth, O.A.R., Bela Fleck, Nickel Creek, Galactic, those are some of my favorite bands/artists. Amazingly enough, I was never a huge fan of Phish. I tried my darndest to get into them, but could only take them in small doses and on Billy Breathes 4. Hip-hop-I'm not really a big fan of the mainstream stuff like Eminem, 50 Cent, or Nelly, but I absolutely love The Roots, The Hieroglyphics, Tribe, Beatnuts, Dialted Peoples, Pete Rock, Pharcyde, and Jurassic 5. 5. I like those wussy singer-songwriters like Dave, John Mayer, and Pete Yorn. Yorn's Day I Forgot is one of my favorite CDs. Even though I'm not sure he's a wuss, but Butch Walker is a little harder addition to this list. If you haven't heard him, you must go now. Left of Self-Centered and Letters are wonderful CDs. I'll go ahead and add former Nixons' frontman Zac Maloy to this list as well. 6. The bands that made great CDs when I was in high school. Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Candlebox (that's right, Candlebox). I'll add Weezer to that since their debut came out my senior year. 7. Alt-country-much more in the past than now. Back when Wilco was good, Son Volt was around, and The Jayhawks didn't suck. I miss 1996. 8. Blendt and Carl Hayn and the Holdouts.
I grew up on '70s & '80s punk rock, I loved the energy and attitude. Those were they days... I love funk. Sly Stone and James Brown are Gods. I'm also a big Parliament / Funkadelic fan. Fridays on 90.9 will set you up. I used to be a reggae / ska head too. I listened to tons of Marley, Tosh, etc. These days it's strictly dub though. At home, I listen to a lot of ambient type of music. I like koto, japanese flute, native american, Shankar, along with "space music" and electronic stuff. I listen to jazz also, well, Mingus.
dude, you just said pete rock!!! how great is that!!! Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth. when they reminisce over you! what a great freaking album. man i miss that stuff.
Music is only useful to me if it meets one of the following criteria. 1. Can I chill to it? 2. Can I dance to it? 3. Can I have sex to it? My favorite types of music in no particular order are Jazz R & B Hip Hop I also like 80's dance music because it brings me back to a happy place. I hate trance because it gives me a headache, country, and Austin blues. Although I was a head banger in my early youth, I really don't enjoy rock music much anymore.
I only like good music. That's my standard response. BUT, if you want me to clarify, lately I've been listening mostly to 2 guys: John Scofield (jazz) Tony Rice (bluegrass) But other mainstays include the gospels of the Rolling Stones (you know the ones I'm talking about, right?), the Beatles, Clapton, Jimi, Zeppelin, Dead, Phish, Allman Brothers, James Brown, PFunk, Elvis, Jorma, Steely Dan, Bela Fleck, mofro, Beach Boys (Brian Wilson anyway), Van Morrison, and an assload of others. I'd throw RM95 in there, but I haven't caught him live yet. You don't like Phish? You should pop in Rift. One of my top 5 albums (we're talking when you play 'em straight through). Mostly, I like early 70s music, though. Like right now I'm diggin' on Super Sessions (Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steven Stills). That might qualify as mid70s, but still, early (and some mid) 70s is where it's at.
Well, I'm currently planning my world tour, but lack of anything resembling talent may put it on hiatus indefintely. Of course, I'm a CD buying junkie, so I have Rift. As luck would have it, Letters just finished, so I'm going to throw it in. Forgot to add David Gray to my wussy list.
Classic Rock. Foreign (Arabic Music) Latin Music (not tejano) I believe it might be because it reminds me of my child hood. Back when I was a kid we used to drive to the beach just about every weekend, and on our way there my dad would be playing AFRTS on the radio (classic Rock) really loud. We used to yell and b**** at him to turn it down. I hated it so much back then. But now, I love it. I can't get enough of classic rock. Makes me think if my dad had played something else on the radio, would I have like that..... EDIT: I also like a lot of Arabic Music etc. Oh, and I also listen to a bit of Latin music, like the Gipsy kings etc. Now that I think about it.... all the music I like seems to have a past from when I was a kid. (parents threw big latin parties with the LOUD dance music on...., I grew up in the middle east.....)
