There's all kinds. Take Rock, for example. You have heavy metal, pop, country-rock, etc. You also have jazz-rock, reggae-rock, power pop, progressive rock, etc. Even in other genres, like jazz, blues, etc., there are sub-categories.

Personally, carried over from another thread, my favorite sub-genre is power pop. I think every decade from the 60s to the 90s has given us two great power pop bands:

    60s:
    The Who
    The Kinks

    70s:
    The Ramones
    Cheap Trick

    80s:
    The Replacements
    The Smithereens

    90s:
    Green Day
    Weezer

But another favorite is reggae-rock. I would definitely put The Police in there as well as UB40. But you can also include The Clash, who put out tons of reggae songs, as well as Elvis Costello.

Blues, Jazz, Rock, Metal, Country, Classical, Hymns, Techno/Trance, Pop, R&B, Soul, Funk, Hip-hop, New Age.

That's enough genres for me. Even classifying those are difficult enough. Is Taylor Swift pop or country? Is John Mayer blues or pop? Is it morally right to classify Justin Bieber and Frank Sinatra in the same genre? The Rolling Stones and Nickelback? Is whatever Ke$ha puts out there actually considered music?

    I can't even imagine dealing with sub-genres.

    I could go on forever....

but I mostly listen to Post-Rock which I guess is a sub-genre of rock, but there are sub genres of Post-Rock (sort of)

Post-Rock being: (old)This Will Destroy, Stubborn Tiny Lights, Red Sparowes, Some Are Gods, Jakob, The Evaptoria Report, The Calm Blue Sea, Sunlight Ascending, Mono, Junius, Mogwai, Not To Reason Why, There Will Be Fireworks, Sand in Fire, Gordon's Tsunami Week, Kwoon

sub-genres of Post Rock would be...

Neo-Classical: Balmorhea, (The)Slowest Runner(In All The World), Riding Alone For Thousands of Miles, The Ascent of Everest, New Century Classics, The Tumbled Sea, My Education, Yndi Halda

Ambient: Tim Hecker, GY!BE, Hammock, Sigur Ros, The American Dollar, We All Inherit The Moon, Gregor Samsa, Oceans, 36, Blueneck, Nyctalgia

Post-Metal: Isis, Neurosis, Irepress, Russian Circles, Year of No Light, Toundra, God Is An Astrounaut, Caspian

folk-y post rock: Immanu El, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Sleep Whale, Nils Frahm, Message To Bears, Halves, The Appleseed Cast, Dreamend

beat based post rock(kind of hip-hop/electronic influenced post rock): Pawa Up First, Pelican, El Ten Eleven, Dalek, Black Taffy aka Fuzzy Mystic, Sage Francis, Cex, Pivot, Sole and The Sky Rider

and probably favorite sub-genre of post rock: DRONE! (new) This Will Destroy You, Nadja(more post metal than post rock...but whatevs), Hotel Hotel, Grouper, Stars of The Lid, Noveller, Andrew Weathers, Belong, La Vérité

there is also some jazzy mathy-post rock like Maserati, Toe, The Mercury Program, and ..ah hem -Tortise(jumps in a bunker hiding from jomama) but I'm not really sure if that is 'post-rock' per se.

I'd break down Dub-Step and IDM, but I'm too sleepy. prolly tomorrow.

Its both entirely necessary and very stupid to make quantifiable segregated categories of music. When you hear something good, you naturally want to hear more of that type of good sound again. You must assign a label to what you just heard, capture and reproduce it.

I just hate the whole social constructs of it, the this kinda person listens to this/that kinda person listens to that = we can then judge people by their music tastes...

Dude! Take the CD out of the player, flip it over, stick it back in, and push play! Listening to A sides is just that easy.

I have never heard The Ramones being described as a "power pop" band - personally, I think that is stretching it. If you really like power pop, you need to listen to Big Star which influenced a lot of these bands you named (outside of The Who and The Kinks).

Listened to plenty of Big Star- nowhere near as great as The Ramones. And The Ramones are absolutely power pop- Do You Wanna Dance, I Wanna Be Sedated, Rockaway Beach, Bonzo Goes to Bitburg, Do You Remember Rock and Roll Radio?, Outsider, KKK Took My Baby Away, Rock and Roll High School, Blitzkrieg Bop- the core of the Ramones' classic songs are like the Beach Boys with really loud guitars. If anything, the only group on that list for which "power pop" is a stretch would be the Replacements.

I'm a big fan of music released on Thursdays and Fridays between January 1, 1967 and June 1, 1967.
