Thanks for the inspiration Manny "YYZ" - Rush "Cliffs of Dover" - Eric Johnson "Summer Song" - Joe Satriani "Little Wing" - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Damn, Drew, as soon as I saw your thread title, the first song that popped into my head was YYZ. You beat me to it! The live version on Exit Stage Left is the best, with Pert doing his solo.
To Live is to Die (I consider it an instrumental) - Metallica Anethesia (Pulling Teeth) - Metallica Call of Ktulu - Metallica Orion - Metallica Paradigm Shift - Liquid Tension Experiment Ytse Jam - Dream Theater YYZ - Rush Eruption - Van Halen Intro - Ugly Kid Joe Black Mountain Side - Led Zeppelin (actually, the White Summer version of it is better) Moby Dick - Led Zeppelin (best drum solo ever) Alley Cat - Liberace Prelude to Madness - Savatage Can't think of any more right now.
Raw Hide - Bill Monroe [If you think Metallica or Pantera plays fast, give a listen to Country Bill; you might be suprised] Another, Take the A Train - Billy Strayhorn [the fastest way to get to Harlem]
Classical Gas- Mason Williams Wipeout - The Surfaris Theme From Peter Gunn - Ray Anthony Green Onions - Booker T & The MG's Third Stone From The Sun- Jimi Frankenstein- Edgar Winter Group Captain Nemo- Micheal Schenker Hideaway- Freddie King Junk- Paul McCartney Riviera Paradise- SRV
I second this notion. The first song that popped in my head was also YYZ. The second song to pop into my head was Joe Satriani's Summer Song. Geez, Drew, we think alike... I'd say Divided Sky by Phish and pretty much any song by String Cheese Incident also fits the bill.
Treefingers - Radiohead Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins Syeeda's Song Flute - John Coltrane Blue Train - John Coltrane Halycyon On + On + - Orbital Icct Hedral - Aphex Twin Computer World - Kraftwerk Melt - Leftfield Chico's Groove - Chemical Brothers First Cool Hive - Moby Twilight - Delerium Ballad (from Spiral) - Vangelis A Different Drum (from Passion) - Peter Gabriel And many others.....
Variations on the Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression - Frank Zappa or anything else from the Shut Up n Play Yer Guitar series of FZ material (btw nice selection Mango)
Several good calls already: YYZ - Rush Little Wing - SRV Eruption - Van Halen Call of Ktulu - Metallica Captain Nemo - MSG (Really good call BobFinn*.) My additions: Almost anything by the Hellecasters (but especially "Orange Blossom Special" and "Mad Cows at Ease") The Nervous Breakdown - Brad Paisley Rude Mood - SRV Mr. Eliminator - The Smithereens Race with the Devil on Spanish Highway - Al Di Meola In the Mood - Glenn Miller Orchestra Do samples count? If not... Agressiva Due - Front 242 American Embassey - Manufacture
How's about some obscure stuff. Medeski Martin & Wood - Bubblehouse Soulive - Steppin' Greyboy Allstars - Toys R Us Great, great jazz songs. I would recommend these to both the sophisticated song connoisseur and the musically challenged. They won't disappoint.
YEAH!! another great IM one...Losfer Words (Big 'Orra)...short but sweet! Agreed...YYZ is the first instrumental to pop into my head.. Europa Satch Boogie Cliffs of Dover Icarus Dream Suite Op 4 Farewell Steve's Boogie Ice 9 Always With me, Always With You Echo Big Bad Moon The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing There are more, but for instrumentals I tend to stick with Eric, Satch, Yngwie and Vai...
I don't know if this one counts, but in line with Van Halen 1984, Europe's The Final Countdown, is an awesome instrumental. After all, its only lyric is It's the final countdown. Also, if stretched a bit, Yes's Closer to the Edge is totally awe-inspiring instrumental music.
