Damn, Drew, as soon as I saw your thread title, the first song that popped into my head was YYZ. You beat me to it! The live version on Exit Stage Left is the best, with Pert doing his solo.

To Live is to Die (I consider it an instrumental) - Metallica
    Anethesia (Pulling Teeth) - Metallica
    Call of Ktulu - Metallica
    Orion - Metallica
Paradigm Shift - Liquid Tension Experiment
    Ytse Jam - Dream Theater
    YYZ - Rush
    Eruption - Van Halen
    Intro - Ugly Kid Joe
Black Mountain Side - Led Zeppelin (actually, the White Summer version of it is better)
Moby Dick - Led Zeppelin (best drum solo ever)
    Alley Cat - Liberace :D
    Prelude to Madness - Savatage

Can't think of any more right now.

I second this notion. The first song that popped in my head was also YYZ. The second song to pop into my head was Joe Satriani's Summer Song. Geez, Drew, we think alike...

I'd say Divided Sky by Phish and pretty much any song by String Cheese Incident also fits the bill.

    Is <i>1984</i> (van Halen) acceptable?

    Thanks Rashmon

    How's about some obscure stuff.

Medeski Martin & Wood - Bubblehouse
    Soulive - Steppin'
Greyboy Allstars - Toys R Us

Great, great jazz songs. I would recommend these to both the sophisticated song connoisseur and the musically challenged. They won't disappoint.

another great IM one...Losfer Words (Big 'Orra)...short but sweet!

Agreed...YYZ is the first instrumental to pop into my head..

    Europa
    Satch Boogie
    Cliffs of Dover
    Icarus Dream Suite Op 4
    Farewell
    Steve's Boogie
    Ice 9
Always With me, Always With You
    Echo
    Big Bad Moon
The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing

There are more, but for instrumentals I tend to stick with Eric, Satch, Yngwie and Vai...

I don't know if this one counts, but in line with Van Halen 1984, Europe's The Final Countdown, is an awesome instrumental. After all, its only lyric is It's the final countdown.

Also, if stretched a bit, Yes's Closer to the Edge is totally awe-inspiring instrumental music.
