I can't stand all the histrioncs of say, a Whitney Houston, but I have a very deep love of certain alt-or not girl bands and singers.

Lush - Can't remember the two girls names right now, but that's where it kinda started. One of them is on my screen saver.

Cocteau Twins. 'Heaven or Las Vegas'. Buy it now!

Souxie Sou - Kind of a no brainers

The Delgados - Emma Polock is delightful. Go get 'Hate'

Neko Case - More than just the chick from New Pornographers

Rebeca Gates - of The Spinanes

Juliana Hatfield. What can I say? I ****ing love her.

Carla Bozulich - The Geraldine Fibbers. If you do not own the Geraldine Fibbers 'Butch' there might still be hope.

Finally an all time best - bet you thought I would say Karen Carpenter, eh, Manny? Nope -

Anna Waronker - formerly of this Dog. Her solo album Anna is way high in my all time top ten. Hell, I actually troll her website I am so smitten. I can not possibly say enough great things about her music, voice and over-all talent.

Whew, I was a little worried there, Win :p ;)

I don't know if all of these women would fit "alternative" but my list includes:

    Joni Mitchell
    Kate Bush
    Liz Fraser (Cocteau Twins)
    Deborah Harry (Blondie)
    Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders)
    Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Tracey Thorn (Everything but the Girl)

    Kim Deal (Pixies, Breeders)
Throwing Muses singer Kristian Hersh (one the most underrated musicians evah)
Sleater-Kinney (I think the singer is named Corrine Tucker, but I may be mistaken)
    Neko Case
    Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab
Beth Gibbons of Portishead (where did you go?)
    Nina Persson of the Cardigans.
My favourite female singer, or singer, period, right now is Alison Goldfrapp. She would give the corpse of Paul Lynde an erection. Damn fine singer, too.

There are probably loads of others I am forgetting. Also, as much as she's a total freak, Courtney Love and Hole (and other folks...)made one the best albums ever with "Live Through This."

Blah, I would've added these two and Tori, but didn't think they quite fit into a Rock thread. Guess I was wrong.

By the way, Beth released a solo album a couple years ago. Portishead was back in the studio last year recording a new album.

I recently got around to downloading a few songs from Yahoo! music unlimited (as opposed to just listening to it streaming), and as of yet, I only have music from five artists downloaded. Besides Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, and The Doors, I have many songs from:

    Sinead O'connor (can't help myself.....I love her)

    and

Concrete Blonde (Johnette Napolitano is the ****!)

She's awesome. I saw her at Mucky Duck a couple months back. One of my bands did a couple shows with Sister Seven back in the day at Satellite. They were killer.
