I've been working for the City of Houston for about 8 months now and the whole time I've been stressing for my coworkers to join me in a trip to my favorite restaurant. I believe this is the only one in Houston and it has been opened for about 2 years now. I originally ate at this place in College Station when I was attending Texas A&M and after coming back I just couldn't live without it. I almost drove up there a few times just to satisfy my craving. Well anyway, today somehow I went with 9 of my coworkers and none of them could shut up about how much they loved it. I'm sure some of you have been there and if so, props to you, but if not I'm about to start crying for you. The name? It's called FREEBIRDS and it's located off of 59 and Greenbriar. They serve a lot of different things, but their specialty is giant burritos! It's a lot like Subway, you pick a size and tortilla and go through telling them what you want on it. One of them can usually fill me up for a day, oh and that's not even the biggest one. If your ever hungry be sure to go by there, but I have to warn you, it's addicting. Pugs
They say Mission Burrito is better for some reason, although I have never gone. I've eaten at the Freebird's on Red River in Austin. I guess it didn't leave too much an impression on me since I cannot distinctly recall it being that good. By the way, which department do you work under for COH?
Call me crazy and my friends often do, but I prefer Chipotle. The white rice just tastes better in a burrito to me. It makes it lighter and less greasy. Freebirds aint terrible though.
I second Chipotle also, a carnitas burrito with lots of cheese, sour cream, and gucamole. I like Freebirds for there nachos thats it. I like Mission Burrito for their monster breakfast burritos.
I've tried Chipotle and the main reason I don't like it is the white rice. I can't have a burrito at Freebirds without the rice. El Toro - I work for Public Works & Engineering - Wastewater. You work for the city too? Pugs
cheap hang-out restaurant: BW3 Willowbrook, but I recently went to Taco Milagro, which rocks nice restaurant: Ruggles, went there for the first time last week and loved it
I'll take Chipotle over Freebird's too. I think a lot of the Freebird's hype is Aggies pining for their days in Station...
I love this place called Fajita Willie's over near 290 and Beltway 8 near Jersey Village. They have the best fajitas I've ever had in my life.
yeah, for the Health Dept. a few Aggie alums here where I work so I was wondering if you were one of them.
i love Ruggles...love Capitol Grille... but i have to say my very favorite restaurant remains: PAPPADEAUX. Between the crawfish bisque, seafood gumbo, blackened oyster & shrimp fondu (sp?), fried/boiled crawfish, fried alligator, dirty rice and garlic mashed potatoes...and that freaking heavenly bread pudding...are you kidding me? i've spent a ton of time in New Orleans and i've never had cajun seafood that good anywhere else. have a friend from new orleans who had to shamefully admit the best seafood gumbo he ever tasted was here in houston at pappadeaux. p.s. don't forget james coney island!
Is Chipolte the place that's in a house on Richmond near Downtown that's open 24 hours? As for my favorite restaurant, I'd have to say Los Cucos on 249 and Spring Cypress. Best mexican food I've ever had. I go there everytime I visit my folks. As far as BBQ goes, hard to beat Carls on 290 near Cy Farm..er, Cy Fair high school.
Fancy dinner : Mark's the best. Its pricey but always fantastic. Overall this is my fave. Insanely fancy dinner: Aldo's is one of those "once in a few years" types of places, dinner for two usually runs 3 hundy. However, its the closest I have come to the Tuscan dining experience in the states. Tex-mex: I dig Lupe Tortilla for beef fajitas. Best beef fajitas in town. Their bar outside has gotten more expensive lately, which sort of pisses me off, so I have been hitting Lupes for lunch more. Cheap mex: Ruchi's Taqueria on West Alabama and Shepherd is my cheap mexican eats joint. Plus you can get drinks at 3am....shhhh....which makes it better than Chachos. BBQ: Goode Company rocks. Cajun: Pappadeux, despite my hate of Pappa's restaurants (I used to work for them)...but their half and half crawfish platter rocks. As far as the burrito debate goes, I like all three equally.
Funny you should mention that place. I went to Jersey Village High School so I spent a lot of my time near there. The only problem is I went there maybe 2 times after living in the area for almost all my life. I don't know why I never went back, I guess I never really though of it even though I saw it over and over shopping at the Kroger right there, and driving by it on 290. I have to agree though, they have great fajitas. Pugs
#1 Oriental Gourmet in Clear Lake. All you can eat sushi, shrimp, ribs, spring rolls, etc. #2 Los Rameriz in Clear Lake - Flameato, gorditas, chimichangas, oh my! #3 Ichibon's in Kemah - Octopus sushi, cheese/crab puff, and and Oriental beer 1/2 off @ happy hour. Great sushi bar. #4 La India Bonita in League City. $1.50 homeade fajita tacos, free all you can eat frijoles ala charra, fresh fixins bar, and mexican cokes in bottles.
Esteban's in the League City. I've ate at this place so many times its sick. This may sound funny but they have the best chips and salsa in the world. (well maybe not the world but they are good)
Ichibon? I never understood the appeal at this place. My brother loves this place as well, and I think the sushi and meats are not good at all. Have you ever been to Benihana's or Tokyohana? They're also hibachi style restaurants, but the food is A LOT better in my opinion. My wife and I won't even go to Ichibon anymore. As for my favorites, I have a few... Kunamwan - I just discovered this place recently because of reviews from this site. WOW! The best Thai food in Houston bar none. Border Grill & Cantina - A family owned Mexican restaurant near where I live, in Pasadena. Great, Great authentic food. Tokyohana - See above And of course there is BW3's. I like the food, but it's also our current hangout. We're there at least twice a week these days.
No, that's Chapultapec. Chipotle is a burrito/taco place similar to Mission Burrito or Freebirds, where they make your burritio in front of you. It's a national chained owned by the McDonald's Corporation. Regardless, it's a decent place to get a quick bite! The following places were on Marvin Zindler's weekend rat and roach report: Berryhill's on Revere/Westheimer and Taco Milagro on Kirby/Westheimer. Both had to throw away hundreds of pounds of food that was kept off temperature.
