Who is your favorite R&B/Funk/Soul act?? (Yes, I know it is a music thread but it has been awhile:p )

I used to really love R Kelly, but I think I like older stuff now.

My list would be as follows:

    1) Zapp/Roger
    2) Parliament/George Clinton
    3) R Kelly
    4) Joe
    5) James Brown

speaking of Chaka Khan, I hear this song on the radio EVERY MORNING!!!! whats up with that?

Baby, baby, when I look at you
I get a warm feeling inside
There's something about the things you do
    That keeps me satisfied

I wouldn't lie to you, baby
    It's mainly a physical thing
This feeling that I got for you, baby
    It makes me wanna sing

    I feel for you
    I think I love you
    I feel for you
    I think I love you

Baby, baby, when I lay wit' you
There's no place I'd rather be
    I can't believe, can't believe it's true
The things that you do to me

I wouldn't lie to you, baby
    I'm physically attracted to you
This feeling that I got for you, baby (Ooh baby)
There's nothing that I wouldn't do (For you girl)

    I feel for you
    I think I love you
    I feel for you
    I think I love you

    I think it's love
    I feel for you
    I think it's love
    I feel for you
    I think I love you
    I feel for you
    I think it's love

    I feel for you
    I think I love you
    I feel for you
    I think I love you

Manny back with the superlatives... what were you smoking to get that Comic Book Guy name, anyway.

Anywho, there're too many R&B/Soul groups/artists I love to name them all, but...

    Anita Baker
    The Commodores
Atlantic Starr (you know which song...)
    Bill Withers (good one Bobo!)
    Delfonics
    Earth, Wind, and Fire
    Isley Brothers
    Curtis Mayfield
    Luther Vandross
    and his arch-nemesis Freddie Jackson
    Etta James

If you want to push it out a bit, we can go into Mo-Town where I think the greatest groups of all time reside...

    Smokey Robinson & the Miracles
    The Temptations, etc.

I could go on and on... this is my favorite genre of music and unfortunately I think it's the one being killed the quickest. :(

I'm just going to ditto Jeff and add a few more:

    Temptations
Isley Brothers (they had a killer guitarist...)

    RR

ps. Speaking of guitarists, does anybody remember Shuggie Otis from the Cooper Session album with Al Cooper? Baby Hendrix... If anybody does have the album, I'll pay handsomely for a CD/cassette copy.

    Yup, they are the ones.

Other classic songs by them include:

    "More Bounce to the Ounce"
    "Be Alright"
    "So Ruff, So Tuff"
    "Dance Floor"
"Doo Wa Ditty (Blow That Thing)"
"I Want to Be Your Man"
    "Slow and Easy"

I would recommend the CD, "All the Greatest Hits", as it has those songs, "Computer Love", and several others.

Sadly, Roger Troutman is no longer with us as he was shot by his brother Lester who then, apparently, shot himself in 1999.

    RIP + - Roger & Lester:(

RR, do you use Grokster or Kazaa? I ran a search and there are quite a few Shuggie Otis songs on there that you can download.

By the way, I like your taste in guitarists:)

Yes, he did. The "California Love" track contains "interpolations" of "So Ruff, So Tuff", but I have listened to both songs and to me it is not an obvious sample/interpolation like say "Will2K" by Will Smith with the sample of "Rock the Casbah" by the Clash.

for some reason, when I read your explanation, I had a flashback to that classic MTV interview with Vanilla Ice where he explains how he didn't rip off David Bowie in "Ice Ice Baby"... his version had an extra "ting" tacked on at the beginning... :D
