Any sport. Any play by play guy. Overall: My fav is Dick Stockton. Hes the first PBP I remember ever listening to, and my most vivid memories of his calls are from the NBA playoffs of the late 80s. He always has a quite intensity in his voice when doing PBP, no matter what juncture of the game he is calling. I actually find myself watching/listening to games that he is calling, just to hear his PBP, even when I am not interested in the game itself. He makes it interesting for me with his style. He is unlike Kevin Harlan who it seems is always just yelling no matter who plain the play is. I think Stockton and Hubie Brown are the best play by play/color combo of all time. Basketball: Dick Stockton - see above Football: Tom Franklin - Not sure if he is still doing PBP for anyone, but back when he did the Oilers, he was always my favorite. Clean cut and to the point. Baseball: Joe Buck - A trendy pick probably, but like Stockton, he has the quite intensity to his voice that keeps me on the edge of my seat.
Scully was great at letting the crowd tell the story and not drowning it out with his words. I remember after the Buckner ground ball in 86 and the Gibson HR in 88, he made his call and then let there be silence for several minutes afterwards.
I always liked Keith Jackson and Dan Fouts for college football and Al Michaels for NFL. Bob Costa does a great job on Olympic coverage. In basketball, I do think Bill Worrell is in the top 5 and Marv Albert is over-rated.
Gene Peterson is the biggest homer ever and he complains to much about the calls against the rockets. I want my pbp guy being a little more objective.
I hated when Bob Costas did basketball. I don't think he's a great play by play guy. I know I'm in the teeny tiny minority on that. I think he's better on the historical segments and I really liked him when he was the studio host of NBC's NFL coverage back in the day. The best I ever heard was Chick Hearn. My favorite still alive is Dick Enberg. I also like Bill Raftery on college basketall. "with the KISS off the glass"
Well, he's being paid by the Rockets, so I think he's allowed to be a homer. Didn't he yell "That's bullsh*t!" on air during a game against the Spurs back in '93?
