Where does everyone like to go for Mexican? My personal favorites are Chuy's on Richmond and some place out on hwy 6 past 1-10 that has the dollar margaritas (name escapes me)
El Paraiso on Fairview near Montrose, which rockHEAD needs to return to. (They serve the salsa in ketchup squeeze bottles now with empty bowls.)
you remembered crispee!!! I'm very wary about returning.. but maybe. My favorite Mexican restaurant in Houston is La Mexicana on Montrose & Fairview. Talk about consistency, this place is consistant. I know every time I visit, the food will be the same and good! I've never had a bad experience there, it may get busy but it's worth it. My favorite cheap Mex place is El Rey Tacqueria on Washington and Shepherd. 99ยข breakfast tacos, excellent rotisserie chicken tacos, can't beat the price. Another favorite is the ORIGINAL Ninfa's on Navigation, there's something about THAT one restaurant that the chain restaurants can't duplicate. It's great. happy eatin' rH
Not sure if it`s still open, but Casa Elana on 1960 and Kuykendahl was awesome..........the best chips and salsa and awesome maragritas!
The Original Ninfa's on Navigation is my favorite, followed by Chuy's on Westheimer & Kirby. For cheap and quick, I like Spanish Village on Alameda and any of the Taqueria Arandas locations. The worst Mexican restuarant in town recently closed (Hacienda, at the corner of Main St. and North Braeswood). Texas Childrens Hospital bought the property and will be breaking ground on another office building there very shortly. Hacienda was great for margaritas after work, but their food was awful.
Another vote for Chuy's. An interesting place is 100% Taquito, the location of which I forget. It's supposed to be more authentic. Cheap and the food's tasty. But more of a lunch place than a sit-down, dinner-with-friends place. Ninfa's (on Kirby?) isn't bad either.
It's all about Chuy's! I had the extreme pleasure of dining at the Westheimer and Kirby location just yesterday. My all-time favorite restaurant. Great food. Moderate prices (especially when compared with Ninfa's and Pappasito's). Fun atmosphere. Not the same old, tired phony-authentic Mexican hacienda/ranch decor. Truly original and funky. Honorable mentions: La Hacienda on South Main. Cheap lunch time buffet. Check it out if you haven't already. Tortuga. Stacked Chicken and Spinach Enchiladas. Mmm-aaaghh. (Picture Homer with his head tilted back, tongue hanging out the side of his mouth.)
I used to live off of Shepard and on Montrose there is an awesome place the serves HUGE burritos and the tables have this carrot/jalapeno/onion type pico that's awesome. Can't remember the name exactly, La Halacienda or something I think. Its relatively cheap too. Right next to a laundrymat in a strip mall. Maybe three or four blocks north of Richmond on Montrose.
Most of the Food you guys are referring to is not "Mexican" food, but a Tex-Mex combination. If you want good authentic, quality Mexican food go to Las Alamedas on I-10 near 610. I would also suggest Americas for South American food, thats an experience. For Cuban food, there is a restaurant named Bossa downtown that is a great little hangout too.
AH, HayesStreet, you're speaking of La Tapatia (sp?) on Richmond past Shepherd. A personal favorite of mine, and CHEEEAAPP! Surprised no one mentioned Guadalajarra (sp?), especially the one across from Compaq Center. Great chips and salsa, and the margaritas ain't bad, either.
One great place that I've never seen mentioned is Cancun's off 1960 in Humble. (just past the 59 intersection) I love Mexican food, and they have the best salsa out of any place I've ever been to. The food is pretty good too, and you get a whole lot with one order. You're almost guaranteed to be bringing something home.
BTW, anyone out there an alum of Dulles High School? There used to be this neat little taqueria across from Dulles and down towards HWY 90 that made these really good breakfast tacos. Just wondering if the palce was still there.
I'm gonna have to beg to differ on Taco Milagro as mexican food. It's like snooty-anglo-nuevo-mexwannabe-semi-gourmet-mexican food. I mean there's no 'traditional' mexican food there... it's all like enchilada's with brie and goat cheese or something far-out like that. They make some mean margaritas but without the salsa bar, their food would really suck. personally I think Taco Milagro sucks. 100% Tacquito off of 59, between like Edloe and Buffalo Speedway on the Westpark side of 59 IS pretty awesome. They serve this chipotle beef that is so savory... Their side dish of corn with sweet cream butter and spices rocks. I recommend 100% Tacquito before or after a Rockets game... good, good stuff. Try the tacos or torta's! rH
Yeah, but you think the original Ninfa's is Mexican food. Enchildas covered with cheese and sour cream, while damn tasty, is not real Mexican food. It is Tex-Mex. Believe it or not, real Mexican dishes can have "high-class" cheeses and sauces. Taco Milagro, Id wager, is closer to traditional Mexican food than all the texmex restaurants suggested thus far. Also, its food is damn good. The quesadillas, all the enchiladas, the salads, burritos. Maybe it is too Mexican for you
I'm partial to Tortillas on Spencer Highway in La Porte. Chicken fajita potato skins....mmmmmm good. I used to go to the location in Clear Lake, which is where I experienced both Rocket championships. Gringos in Pearland on FM 518 is pretty good.
I thought Taqueria la Tapitia was okay the one time I went. I guess I heard so much about it, I was predisposed against it. It is cheap, though. I'll have to go back and try it again.
My favorite is Lil' Pappasito's on Richmond @ Kirby-the atmosphere is funky, but nice enough to bring my wife. The food is good and relatively cheap. I like to go before Rockets games because it is close to the laptop. I also like Cafe Noche on Montrose near Fairview- very good Margaritas A quick recipe for home made salsa: 2 --14.5 oz cans tomatoes- whole if available 1 can rotel tomatoes 1/4 Purple or yellow onion 1/2 teaspoon garlic ( I use the kind already cut up in the jar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper- use fresh ground if you have it 1/4 cup cilantro (fresh in produce section) Mix ingredients in food processor. My family likes it chopped really fine-no chunks Chill overnite-serve with chips
I think you're remembering La Jaliscience, which is actually located on Montrose just south of Dallas. And I agree - the place rocks. My preference is their Pollo Jaliscience (chicken draped with jack cheese and mushrooms and served with tortillas). Irma's, which is located on Chenevert in downtown is another great restaurant. Spinach enchiladas to turn Republican for and the lemonade is awesome. Irma herself works as the hostess and always remembers you when you com back a second (and 3rd and 4th and etc...)time. Chuy's has the best enchiladas. Period. The Elvis Presley plate is the epitome of Tex-Mex indulgence. I have not been to the Original Ninfa's on Navigation in years but the other Ninfa locations have gone to crap. Too bad - Ninfa's used to be peerless. Pappasito's is good for office parties and happy hours. The food is consistent and the service is good. Finally, I really like a place called Spanish Flower at the T-section of North Main and Airline. Not everything there is good but if you know the right dishes (fajitas), it's great.
