I remember watching cartoons and ending the saturday morning with the Channel 26 - Kung Fu Matinee My favorites were - 5 Deadly Venoms Super Ninjas and anything Bruce Lee I use to love these movies Hopefully the The Success of Couching Dragon Hidden Tiger will bring more of these back . . . I even love the American movies [ESP WITH MY MAIN MAN . . . . JIM KELLY!!!!] Rocket River EVERYBODY WAS KUNG FU FIGHTING . . . . THOSE GUYS WERE FAST AS LIGHTNING!! IT WAS A LITTLE BIT FRIGHTNING!!!
No way RR! I was all about Kung Fu Theatre back in the day. I wish it was still on. I love anything with the Master in it (Bruce Lee, who else??) Crouching Tiger was excellent, and I love Jackie Chan as well. I like the 'serious' martial arts flicks (Enter the Dragon, Crouching Tiger, etc) a lot more than the goofy ones like Rush Hour, etc. That's not to say I don't like Rush Hour, I just prefer the more serious "You killed my father! Prepare to die!" movies a lot more.
Some fan you are. You know the real quote is : "You killed my father! I will go into the mountains and find an insect, watch how it fights, then snatch a pebble from a 400 year old Shao Lin monk's hand, bloody my head up as I bash it against bags of sand to harden it, get a new outfit, shave my head, become disciplined, and then come back to avenge him. Prepare to die!"
That's funny on that DVD cover the Motion Picture Guide says "Totally Irresistible". Umm....are you a pre-pubescent girl or something? I think with "The Karate Kid"....it is not a question of whether it is resistible or not. Maybe they should have just said "Totally Awesome" or "Totally Cool"! The one they used seems to apply more to a movie with skin or sex in it or something. From what I recall, Ralph Macchio and/or Elizabeth Shue weren't exactly giving off an irresistible quality in this one. Maybe they were referring to Mr. Miyagi...now he's as totally irresistible as they come . The reviewer can't resist the appeal of a short man with natural Karate qualities . Here are some more of the comments from the actual review: "Bend over and sand the floor, Mr. Miyagi. Paint the fence, little man. Wax the car you stud. Wax on....wax off. Oooh....totally irresistible! Mr. Miyagi had it going on in this one." Motion Picture Guide - proud sponsor of Smit's Gay beer. Haha....LOL. I'm just messing wit ya'll. Those comments about the movie struck me as a bit odd unless your a little girl fantasizing over Danielson.....or worse yet...Mr. Miyagi. hahaha....Surf
Jackie Chan's older films kick ass. Try and get the ones with Sammo Hung as the director, they are awesome. My favorite Jackie Chan film is "The Armour of God". He does this stunt where he jumps off a cliff and lands on the top of a hot air balloon. It's bloody unreal, mate. But my favorite line is: "I beat you before, I beat you again!". I can't remember who said it (could have been Bruce Lee).
"Game of Death" with Bruce Lee in that yellow, black-striped jumpsuit beating the crap out of Kareem but not before Kareem kicks the crap out of Bruce while sitting down leaving a footprint on Bruce's chest. That is one of my very favorites along with the rest of his movies.
I've always loved kung-fu movies and never missed Kung Fu Theatre as a kid. I've been watching a lot of old Jet Li movies and some of them are really great. A couple I've seen recently that I'd strongly recommend are "Fist of Legend" this is a remake of Bruce Lees "Fist of Fury" aka "Chinese Conection" awesome movie ! "Twin Warriors" not to be confused with the J.Chan movie of the same name. One of the best kung fu flicks ever. I really like the "once upon a time in china" series also.
Rocket River, not trying to pick on you or anything, but I have to correct your title, it should be Favorite Martial Arts Pictures. Karate is really an art form under the Martial Arts (MA) umbrella. Think of MA as equivalent to "4-wheel motor vehicle" and Karate as a Toyota Camery. There are many other art forms like Wing Chun (which Bruce Lee is very good at), Judo, Tai Chi, etc... that are categorized at the same level as Karate, just like Camery, Accord, Tauraus, etc... There are many confusion with the term Karate and Kung Fu. Many people think that they mean the same or that these are generic terms that cover all Oriental art form of self-defense. In the case of Karate, it's just one art form (another example, think of optometry in the field of medicine). The term Kung Fu is a generic term to refer to all self-defense art forms that originated from the Chinese (China, Hong Kong & such) Karate originated from Japan, hence doesn't fall into the Kung Fu category (though some believe it's ancestry came from China). MA as the word indicate is ART. I hate it when people make fun of it without understanding what it is. It is an art just like music, writing poetry, dancing, or even shooting hoops. Dumbasses think MA is stupid when you could be using a gun, not realizing the art side of MA. If people learn MA for the purpose of beating somebody up or to look cool, they are really missing the point. Sorry for the venting, that line of thinking always piss me off ... When I watch MA movies, I watch it for the "art" of fighting, even though I know these things doesn't happen in real situations. Don't we all enjoy those Arnold movies where troops of soldiers with machine guns hunt down Arnold and he usually come out unscratched? If I want realistic stories I will go read an autobiography or watch a documentary. I don't expect others to like MA movies, but I do expect them to acknowlege it as art, just like Opera. Heck, I hate Opera, but I do recognize it for what it is. As far as Bruce Lee movies, I hated them. The fighting usually involves Bruce and a bunch of dummies that just stand around waiting to get hit. There are very few if any counter punches/kicks from his enemies. All you see is Chuck Norris throwing his arm out for Bruce to grab and all Jabbar ever did in the movie is raise his leg. That is not fighting. This is where I find Jackie Chan's movie more enjoyable, because his enemies are usually as good if not better than him. You see "movements" in every strike. My appreciation for Jackie's movies is that he does his own stunts and that there is really something to watch during those fight scenes. But I also need to add that I think he is a terrible actor and his movie's story lines are usually outrageous and/or terrible. I saw Rush Hour 1 and I thought it was just OK (I gave it a "B"), I haven't seen the sequel yet. Oh, I need to say this. I hate "The Karate Kid" The story line was basically a rehash of many other MA movies. The acting was bad (though better than many MA movies). The fight scenes were horrendous. I just don't understand the fascination with that movie and it's sequels. Rocket River, 5 Deadly Venoms was great, I loved that movie when it was released. I also love the other movies that were starred by those 5 leading actors. But those movies don't stand a chance in comparison to the now fast-paced MA movies. That movie was considered one of the movie that broke the trend for MA movies at the time (1980, I believe). RR, FYI. The actor who played the "Lizard" in 5 Deadly Venom had a cameo appearance in "Tomorrow Never Dies". I also believe he was the fighting choreographer for the movie as well.
