It's hard to choose. But I will say: 1983 - A Merman I Should Turn To Be Jimi is going to escape to Atlantis or Neptune in his machine at the end of the world. Great stuff.
I love Red House, probablly one of his most basic/in the vein of blues standard-y, but it's always been one of my favorites. And love VooDoo Child. Been listening to the Monterey Show lately, love the live Like a Rolling Stone cover and Rock Me Has anyone checked out any of these releases? www.daggerrecords.com ?
Nearly impossible to pick one.. Bold as Love 1983 Angel nearly any of the acoustic material (I wish there were more of it)
You would think I would choose one of his bluesy songs, but.... My favorite is.... (Let Me Stand Next To Your) Fire followed, in a close second place, by... Crosstown Traffic Move over, Rover!
Freedom of the live stuff... I love 'Killing Floor' from Monterey. To hit the American stage like that is awesome. and 'Johnny B. Goode' from Berkley.
Manic Depression deserves a mention. Long time ago, one of my buddies found an old cassette at a garage sale, white cassette tape with a purple label sticker - Jimi's band when he was 18 or so. All covers, sounded like they were the typical bar/party/wedding band. Hearing young Jimi sing "Hang on Sloopy" is pretty funny.
Edit: Hear My Train A Comin (both non-acoustic versions) An absolute monster song. It's hard to pick a favorite......
