Though I can't afford to play them often here's the top 5 of the courses I've played one time or another:

    1. Meadowbrook Farms -- I love the layout. The course is wide open and you can't see most of the surrounding holes. The bad news is they are beginning to build homes on the site.

    2. The Tradition at Cypresswood -- beautiful course. I've only played it twice. Tough and long, for me anyway.

    3. Royal Oaks -- I hate courses surrounded by homes but this place is the exception...incredible homes to look at. Nice layout...bunkers are a b**** though. Best on course restroom facilities I've ever seen. Nicer than the restrooms in many homes.

    4. Old Orchard -- One of the first really nice courses I played when I moved here. Short compared to most but tight. I shot one of my best scores here so it will always remain special.

    5. Fish Creek --It's a haul north of the Woodlands. It'll be even better once it matures.

    1. Black Horse CC - I was able to play this course in a company scramble. Absolutely amazing course, but not recommended for the below average player like myself, unless you are in a scramble.

    2. Masters at Bear Creek CC - Not the best looking course, but man, what a challenge, and not a bad deal, IF you play the Challenger course first and pay to play the second 18.

    3. Magnolia Creek - Links style course with a lot of wind. I love having a 20 mph wind into my back and thinking I'm a pro after my drive goes an extra 50 yards.

That's all I have played in the Houston area. I have only been back to Houston for a year and a half, so I don't know all the nice courses just yet. If you want to know about cheap courses for crappy players, I know a few of those. :)

I love to play Old Orchard, but the greens fee is a little steep.

Hermann Park is fun to play but gets packed on the weekends.

One public course that I really like to play is Cinco Ranch. It's challenging and they keep up the greens and fairways nicely. Also, the greens fee is pretty reasonable, and if you play hooky from work one day during the week you can usually get a great deal there on a greens fee.

Has anyone tried the new course just south of the Astrodome? I forget the name of it but it was profiled in the Houston Chronicle recently.

I just can't imagine spending 6 hours on a golf course for only 18 holes! Thus...I always play the cheapies!

Glennbrook (BEWARE:got my cellhpone & 5dollarbill stolen out of my cart by the cart guy...he says there was nothing there, but all I did was return my key and go back outside...hmmm)

Houston Hills, till it shut down a while ago.

BTW: I caddied at River Oaks for about 2 weeks, nice place but not that nice. Its just a tad bit racist lookin' what with all the black butlers and such.:(

I'm off on Mondays so that's when I play...no 6 hour rounds. Usually no more than 4 which is perfect.

Cinco Ranch is an old favorite. I know every hole by heart. I used to play Greatwood back in the day before all the houses went up.

Memorial Park is my favorite muni...I love the layout. Every hole is unique. The length kills me there.
