I'm an only child so most of the time it was just the three of us during the holiday season. Every year my mother and I would go and pick out the Thanksgiving turkey, I remember riding in the buggy at the grocery store while she flipped and poked through turkeys picking out the right one along with what seemed like hundred of grocery items to make sure Thanksgiving dinner was perfect. Thanksgiving was a big cleaning event for my mom and my dad. My dad and I cleaned the house all day as she cooked during the day and into the night. She would talk on the phone with her sisters, most of whom have passed (one this past weekend), while she created her many Thanksgiving masterpieces. Year after year as mom wrapped up the cooking, my dad and I sat in our living room listening to the Nat King Cole Christmas Album and flipping through TV channels while waiting on her to finish so that we could all watch something together. The smell of turkey, Johnson's floor wax and pine is still a combination that gives me comfort at their house during this time of year. I mention this because I'm taking my 73 year old mother to pick out a turkey today. There's a sweet sadness that goes along with it because I know that most of our Holiday seasons are behind us, but as cheesy as it might sound, those memories will live on forever. Happy Holidays.
probably the time I triple-dog-dared Flick to stick his tongue on the light post outside of school...
Till this very day, some 40 years later, I have a chipped tooth from playing football Thanksgiving morning when I was 10 or 11. I caught an elbow from my older brother and split my lip and chipped the tooth. Eating turkey that day was no fun at all. Great memory. Good thread.
 Maybe I should had led with the story of when I fingered my best friends sister at "holiday with the homeless". Good times.
This is my first Thanksgiving without my mother. Rather than be sad, however, I chose to focus on the many wonderful Thanksgivings and blessings that we shared. My favorite memories? If you mean besides the gluttony, probably playing football with my friends. Do kids even do that anymore? Happy Holidays AB.
