We've done just about every other rock instrument save electric sitar, so let me hear it... Bernard "Pretty" Purdie Joe Jones Philly Joe Jones Tony Williams Ringo Starr (laugh, and I'll cut you. He's dropped some of the tastiest shyte you've ever heard). Jim Keltner Bonham Moon Levon Helm Jim Gordon Jimmy Chamberlain Buddy Rich Dennis Chambers Hal Blaine Paul Wolfson Jim Capaldi Roger Taylor Charlie Watts
As a looooong time drummer, I'm pretty opinionated about this subject... - Buddy Rich is a legend. No one can touch him. - Neil Peart (from Rush) is amazing. Check out YYZ as exhibit #1... - Rick Allen (from Def Leppard) is an inspiration to others. The dude plays drums with one arm. You try that... - Phil Collins is a serious kickass drummer (don't laugh). I saw Genesis perform live in '93, and I thought the Drum Duet he performed with Chester Thompson was the coolest solo (... or duet) I've ever heard. - Jon Fishman (from Phish) is also amazing. Other drummers I like: Roger Taylor (Queen) Kenny Aronoff (I know him for John Melloncamp stuff) Carter Beauford (just because I like DMB...) Ron Wilson (come on... the dude created Wipeout!) Jon Bonham (Led Zepplin) Max Weinberg (uh... j/k)
Frank Beard (pre-Eliminator) Matt Cameron Don Henley All I can think of for now that haven't been mentioned already...
This is fun too... Dennis Chambers Jack DeJenette Elvin Jones Steve Smith Vinnie Cohliuta John Bonham Stewart Copeland Steve Gadd Jeff Porcaro Omar Hakim Simon Phillips Dave Wekyl Airto Manu Katche Marvin "Smitty" Smith Pat Mastellato Mitch Mitchell Abe Laboriel Jr. (his dad was a helluva bass player too) Lots more I've forgotten. Geez, my spelling is bad.
Kudos to all named above...here is one that might not be thought of: Zak Starkey. Ringo's son now drums for the Who and is really great. Also, Pete Thomas of the Attractions is a bad mutha.
1. Neil Peart 2. Neil Peart 3. Neil Peart Lenny Kravitz drummer is absolutely amazing...you know, the gal with the big fro!
I know I'm going to forget people. Buddy Rich. Plain and simple, none better. Tony Williams. Philly Joe Jones Jo Jones Gene Krupa (he practically invented the drums for the public) Steve Gadd Neil Peart Vinnie Coliauta Max Roach John Bonham Elvin Jones (ELVIN!!!) Billy Cobham Louie Bellson (nicest man I ever met) Jeff Porcaro Simon Phillips ("Give Blood" -- LISTEN!) Steve Smith Joe Morello Keith Moon Dave Weckl Dennis Chambers Roy Haynes Shelly Manne (no better brush technician ever) Ringo Jack DeJohnette Terry Bozzio Bernard Purdie Stewart Copeland Omar Hakim Manu Katche Mitch Mitchell Marvin Smitty Smith Carter Beauford Billy Ward Russ Miller The drummers of Motown (Pistol Adams, etc.) Clyde Stubblefield Jabo Starks Al Jackson, Jr. David Garibaldi Phil Collins (when he's not doing that sappy ballad junk) Charlie Watts Hal Blaine Tony Royster, Jr. And like I said, I know I forgot tons others.
Carter Beauford is one bad mamma jamma Futureman (of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones) isn't a traditional drummer, but he ROCKS on the synthaxe-drumitar
