My girlfriend and I are taking a trip up to Austin next week and I was wondering if any of you Austin residents or people familiar with Austin could recommend some nice restaurants/cafes with good live music. I'm pretty flexible in terms of price range, from cheap, under-$10 entrees to $15-$20 entrees. Same with atmosphere, whether casual or slightly dressy. But I would like to find a place where we can get some of the good live music Austin's known for. I'm pretty open in terms of genre too. My girlfriend and I are beginning a long-distance relationship and won't be able to see each other too often, so I want to show her a good time. I'm sure this topic has come up before, but unfortunately, the Search function is disabled. And for those of you who perform, feel free to plug yourselves.
Great breakfast after a night of drinking...Juan in a Million on Cesar Chavez. It's right past Robert E. Martinez St. if you're heading east. Try the Con Queso breakfast or the Don Juan Tacos.
I haven't been to Austin in 5 years, but my favorite eating place is Threadgill's. As far as music goes, I prefer the Continental Club. Antone's, to me, has kind of gone downhill since Clifford went to the slammer and they started booking music other than blues.
If you haven't been to Austin in 5 years, then how do you know that Antoine's has gone downhill since Clifford's been in the slammer...he only went a couple of years ago. Threadgills is great. Jazz on 6th St. is a great cajun place that normally has some sort of music act on at nights.
There's tons of great restaurants in Austin. Just check out www.austin360.com to search for them Here's my favorites: The County Line - some of the best BBQ in Texas Trudy's - popular TexMex joint, with the best Mexican martini in town Chuy's - another popular TexMex spot, great margaritas (just ask Jenna Bush) The Clay Pit - contemporary Indian cuisine, with some really neat dishes. Try the lamb vindaloo. Freebird's - $5.50 custom made burritos, that are perfect if you're hungry, and don't want to wait. Thai Passion - Nice downtown setting, very reasonable prices, kickass curry dishes, tom yum soup. Romeo's - One of the best Italian places in town. Classy and reasonably priced. Hut's Hamburgers - Matthew McConaghey's favorite burger place in town. There's like 20 different burgers to choose from Alligator Grill - best cajun food in town Cool River Cafe - steaks here are unbelievable
I used to work there. The food really isn't all that, but would probably agree about the Mex Marts. If you are going to treat yourself to one, get something other than the "house" Mex Mart because is tastes horrible. IMO Tia's has better food.
For the hippies out there: Best vegetarian Mexican food I've EVER had is at Mr. Natural's on Cesar Chavez. Mother's makes a great vegan lasagna. For fans of live music: There are great bars for every musical taste. For fans of good bars sans live music: I like Club DeVille. The back deck with the mountain side is very cool.
Ditto on the "house." It's bitter as hell. For only like $1 more, you can upgrade to El Jimador silver tequila. Definitely worth it. As far as the menu goes, I think the food is damn good for the price. Almost every item is under $10. I like the Migas and Fajitas plate, personally. The chicken chipotle's good as are the chicken flautas.
thanks for the suggestions, everyone. What do you think about Stubbs'? It's apparently known for its live music, and has good food as well. Thoughts? You guys are great, by the way. I can remember the days without Internet, but it's hard to imagine life without it now.
Check out the Austin Chronicle online for food and music listings- *Stubbs is a great place for BBQ and music.
