Is there a work-around with this stuff? I formatted my external hard drive a while ago from FAT32 to NTFS b/c Fat32 wouldn't let me put in large files and i'm always downloading 1080p movies/games 7gb+ etc.

I just bought a new PlayStation 3 and have read that they don't detect NTFS. Now i'm pissed b/c i can't play or save my movies on there and my network is in a funk..so streaming is laggy and terrible. I heard you lose everything if you go back to FAT32 and also it's bad if you keep switching back and forth which i would have to do every time i download a new large file.

Anyone know of any options i got besides buying the movies/games?

If you are downloading large mkv files, there is a program called mkv2vob that you can use to split the file into FAT32 compatible parts that you can play on the PS3.

I figured that was going to be one of my only options. That's just too much of a pain in the ass to spilt all my movies in 2.

I do have an LG 3d LED tv that detects my external, but it sometimes won't detect the video type, or most of the time on mkv files, it won't play dts audio. So i have to convert every audio file in each movie to dolby just to play on my tv. It's too much bs.

Yeah, no other way to get a 4gb+ file onto your ps3 unless you transfer it over network or you burn it onto a disc. I used tversity but I think PS3 recognizes Windows as a media server now.

You have to use mkv2vob software to convert the movie to a format that the ps3 can read.

Beware trying to play HD movies you have downloaded. Sony snuck on some anti piracy software so it detects them. Sometimes stops the movies and other times it stops the sound.

What's really crooked is that Sony's bluray players can play mkv's. I think if you were to use windows media player as your server off the ps3, you can only stream. Tversity works like a file browser and can copy over files. It won't make your ps3 play them if it's an mkv though.

I don't think I've had any problem with large files on the PS3. As a matter of fact, it plays huge .m2ts files I've placed in DVDs. Try just making a copy, then renaming the file as an ".MPG" extension, then copy it to the PS3.

I've never heard of this NTFS/FAT32 thing you're mentioning. Did you just read it and haven't tried it, or do you know for certain that 8G+ files won't play from your external hard drive? Give it a try... it just MIGHT work. Try the extension renaming, too... you might have to change your folder options to show you the extension for "known" file types.

personally if you are getting mkv files i'd invest the 60-75 bucks into a media player that can play them...i have the western digitial live tv plus and it works great it reads mkv files and NTFS hard drives as well you can hook up 2 external drives to it (or if you get the hacked firmware a usb hub with multiple drives) it has network features as well so you can stream files over your network.

I like it with anime shows since it can play soft subtitles that are embedded in the mkv file as well as multiple audio streams.

the ps3 is great if you convert the mkv to mpg files with mkv2vob as others suggested here but with the 4gig file size limit you are restricted. plus i have noticed a lot of the m2ts files that are out there do not have a dolby digital or dts 5.1 track its like a mp3 5.1 or something and on larger size tv the loss in detail and sharpness is noticeable with the 4 gig file as opposed to the larger mkv files.

PS3 only reads FAT32 which only allows you to put in 4gb files at a time. Most of my files are over 4gb each.

Making the switch to comcast to get 30mb internet instead of the current 6 from uverse lol...Then ill use the network to copy over my files to the ps3 once i've converted them.

You know the speed of your ISP has nothing to do with how fast you can transfer files on your network, right?

Another vote for a dedicated media player. I know you want to use your shiny new ps3, but there's an abundance of cheap options like the WD and the roku player out there.

    Got some media server/streaming problems.

Made the switch to Comcast last night. Set up my internet connection and my PS3 detected ps3 media server and also the pc itself. I was able to stream anything. Now as usual from when i had U-verse....nothing is being detected. Not ps3 media server, not the PC, not the laptop. Smart TV DLNA not working.

This is getting annoying. Seems like it only detects it once in a while. Anyone got any ideas? I got the pc and laptop media streaming all switched on. Got the ps3mediaserver to allow sharing with all my drives...yet nothing.

    A thought?

see if you can format it in exfat
if not, why not partition it into two and make one fat32 and one ntfs
