Wife is Jewish. Converted. I am not although I find myself 'learning' nowadays. Yom Kippur is now and she is supposed to be fasting. She is pregnant and in her first trimester which is where my question comes up, does this make it okay not to fast. Im a bit worried and wanted to see if anyone else has came upon this situation. Either fasting during prego or is there a real health problem for the child (and/or mother)?
Definatley need to talk to her doctor on this one.. I would say don't fast while pregnant, but thats just my opinion..
Well I'm Muslim and the during the fasting month of Ramadan, it is advised that pregnant women absolutely not fast at all. It can damage the baby because you are not giving it proper nutrients for growth. I don't know the situation for Yom Kippur though. I guess you probably need to get some advice from your local Rabbi.
As a jewish person, I am 99% sure if fasting is a health risk to either the baby or the mother, she is not supposed to do it. I would definitely have her consult her doctor or any other health professional before doing so. Happy new year to those celebrating, and have an easy fast..
Another question then, I dont know what kinda law she follows pertaining but is there something to not watching tv or getting on the internet after a certain time. Or even calling on the phone? I think its every Friday night after she lights her candles? And if so, what are you doing on the internet buddy?!?!? Teasing teasing. But for real, thank you Rocket brothers for the rapid replies! Means a lot!
Is it ok to fast for one day by just drinking juice or is it water only? Do people usually fast for a couple of days without food or just one day? I read the benefits include "resting the digestive system" and "getting rid of toxics" in your body ... is that true?
I dont think you can drink during a religious fasting??? As far as getting rid of toxins, I've heard the same, umm resting the digestive system? Well I guess they do work hard sometimes...lol
It's okay to fast, because have you ever heard of the Darwin Awards? Wouldn't you like your family to be given a prize? Only Jewish babies can survive not being given essential nutrients during one of the most important times in development, haven't you ever wondered why come Christians are so fat? This is precisely the time to worry about not feeding, you've done a great job, you will make a great father. You are so smart and good and I hope you have one billion babies the same way, I thank you
I wouldn't want my wife to fast if she was pregnant. There are a lot of complications caused by women fasting during Ramadan when they don't realize they're pregnant. However, this situation is a lot different because it's only a 24 hour fast, not daily fasting for a whole month.
Maybe I misunderstood -- wouldn't it make more sense to get medical advise from a doctor than the local rabbi?
Talk to your rabbi and your doctor. I'm not Jewish, but it sounds like your rabbi would probably absolve her of breaking fast. If your rabbi says she has to fast, talk to a medical professional ASAP. Your wife's OB should be on-call during her pregnancy, so call them up.
In general, preggo women need an increase of 300 cal/day during the 1st trimester, and 500 cal/day after the 1st trimester, and also need increases in protein and other nutrients. But yeah, you definitely need to ask your doctor. I have zero clue about religious rules, but expectant mothers AND the fetus NEEDS nutrition. No reasonable religion would require otherwise.
you'll have to use common sense with this one. hope i don't see a yahoo.com news article on you guys later.
any rational rabbi will tell you health comes first. in my experience, any half way decent medical reason gets you out of fasting. last time i went to temple (which was probably last yom kippur), the rabbi reminded the congregation that even if you are just under the weather and feel you need food avoid getting sick, you are allowed to eat.
