You might check the settings on your modem also (on the control panel). There is a place you can set the max connection speed.

    What brand the modem is?

Pray that it´s not a HSP, or you´re in trouble.

    cson,

BTW -- You sound like a prime candidate for DSL. You would love it -- it's great. I connect at 700-800K.

Can any of yall recommend a good DSL service? I have the same problem with a slow connection and it's very frustrating at times.

    I use Southwestern Bell.

When shopping around, I found that with almost all of the services leased the actual connections from Southwestern Bell, because they own the equipment. The only option seemed to be who initially collected the money for the DSL service (which goes to SWBell anyway), plus paying the specific company to serve as an ISP, (which is included with the SWBell service).

To be honest, since it's always connected, with no dial up, it makes absolutely no difference who the ISP provider is. I never see anything on my computer that says SWBell. I also like not having a middleman, and the fact it is included in my phone bill, so I don't have to keep track of another bill.

    ?!

Absosnootly wrong. The ISP does make a difference. Your connection goes through the ISP no matter who your DSL provider is. If your ISP can't handle the traffic, then your connection suffers, and yes, there are ISP's whose piddly T-1's can't handle the traffic.

ISP's also matter depending on what type of service you want. I can't run a static-IP server on GTE's Internet service, yet using Directlink's Internet service with GTE's DSL, I am allowed to run a server. August.net has a plan that allows you to pay based upon usage rather than a flat-rate fee. Some people like this.

Go to your modem manufacturer's site and look for better initialization strings. Also, the copper that runs to your house may only be able to handle up to 28.8k. Many people will never even approach the 53k or so max on a 56k modem, so don't be disappointed to not hit that speed. [IMG]

    Thanks ya'll
I'm afraid it's probably 'cause I live in some crusty old apartments that are pretty jacked up.

Thanks for all the advice though!

Call your central office and see what they are maxed out at....CO=phone company in your area.

I had the same problem with Southwestern Bell in my old house. The hub they had out in my neighborhood maxed out at 28.8 kbps.
