I was at that "top secret recipe" site, and I noticed a recipe for KFC extra crispy chicken...Well, that got me to thinking about this trivia question...

Why did Kentucky Fried Chicken change it's name to KFC??

That's the more popular theory out there, Behad, but not what I read...

Why did KFC change their name? :

    From Snopes.com (http://www.snopes2.com/horrors/food/kfc.htm) :

A move to de-emphasize "chicken" because KFC planned to offer a varied menu that included other types of food. (The Boston Chicken corporation took the same approach for the same reason, changing their name of their retail food outlets to Boston Market.)

A desire to eliminate the word "fried," which has negative connotations to the increasingly health-conscious consumer market.

A recent trend towards the abbreviation of long commercial titles, as demonstrated by other companies' employing shortened forms of their names, such as The International House of Pancakes (IHOP) and Howard Johnson's (HoJo).

Interesting, DoD...Here's what I read a while back...

Apparently, the state of Kentucky was having financial trouble back in the early 90's. In an effort to get some extra cash, they decided to copyright the word "Kentucky", thereby making any company that uses the word Kentucky in any products to pay the state royalties...In response to this, Kentucky Fried Chicken changed it's name to "KFC"...

Anybody know if there's any truth to this?? I thought I read it on the Urban legends page, but I can't bring the page up on my AOHELL account tonight...

Maybe MY version of the story is the urban legend!!

There is a section of the snopes page called the "Lost Legends" that are parody pages. These include a legend that Mr. Ed was a zebra among others. Also included in this section is the KFC legend that you've mentioned here (about Kentucky trademarking the name of the state and that being why KFC changed its name).

Here's a link to that page. Notice at the bottom where it says "This page is a parody"

A fellow band mate (who will believe anything - he still thinks The Blair Witch is real) told me that The Colonel had a clause in his will that once he was dead that all Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises would have to give away their inventory to the hungry and homeless until the stock was depleted. The execs supposedly changed the name to KFC to circumvent this clause. This sounds insane to me but he insists this is the case.
