One thing you see mentioned fairly frequently on this board are trades that were available to the Rockets but for whatever reason didn't go through. For example, we've all heard about the Olajuwon for Christie, Willis + draft picks, the Willis and Elie for Stodamire and (most famously) Sampson for Drexler and the 1984 #2 draft pick.

However, I've never read similar stories about other teams. By this, I mean a situation where say the Lakers offered Player A to the Celtics for Player B. So I thought I'd ask the other posters around here to see if they know of any such failed trades between other NBA teams.

Wasn't Iverson to Detroit a done deal until Matt Geiger wouldn't waive his no-trade provision? Detroit could have used Iverson's offense in the Celtic series.

I'm not sure about the Iverson to Detroit trade, but I seem to remember that when Penny was still with the Magic, there was rumour that he was gonna be traded for Iverson.

Scottie Pippen was supposed to go to Seatle in 94 for Shawn Kemp and draft picks but the Seatle's GM chickend out.

Yes, Iverson and Stackhouse would have been the main exchange. But Geiger broke it up - everyone else had agreed to it.

Didn't Houston back out of the Sampson-Jordan exchange?

Yeah, we might not have drafted Jordan and taken Bowie or Perkins instead because Drexler was going to be our 2 guard or we might've taken Barkley and we would've had our big three much earlier than we had our big three.

So are there any more famous almost-trades that didn't involve the Rockets?

I refuse to believe that the Pippen trade ever happened. Does that count?
