...only jerks. Fake ice cream truck just a prank WNDU-TV Mishawaka, IN - A situation that looked like someone trying to kidnap children, actually turned out to be a very poorly timed prank. A pick-up truck playing ice cream truck music in a Mishawaka neighborhood caused parents to call police. It turns out two high school boys thought it would be funny to use the familiar music to get kids to run toward their truck. Barry Dickerson of Rose Park in Mishawaka blew the whistle on a blue truck Sunday night that was playing ice cream truck music on their street. They thought someone was trying to lure children using the music. “Attracting little kids to a strange vehicle, I don't see how that's funny,” said Dickerson. Acting on a tip, the Mishawaka High School Resource Officer questioned two boys who admitted using a loudspeaker system to draw kids to the truck to then speed-off just to watch their reaction. "Readily he said, ‘Yeah, we did it. It was a stupid thing. It was done as a joke. We never intended to harm any children. It was just kind of a prank we played that kind of backfired in our faces,’ ” said Mike Samp, Assistant Chief, Mishawaka. "It was not a very funny prank,” said Dickerson. Police doubt there'll be any charges since technically, nothing illegal happened but at least a neighborhood on-edge now knows the truth. “At least we can give them a little bit of comfort knowing that in this particular case it was nothing more than a prank,” said Chief Samp. While police say finding the boys who pulled this prank does provide some relief, neighbors say this has acted like a wake-up call, leaving parents more vigilant where their children are concerned.
Everyone's on edge, which I guess is good for the kids but it pisses me off that kids can't have a normal childhood anymore ... that they need to be taught to 'watch out' for sickos. We have a registered sex offender about 2 blocks from our pool/daycare/elementary school (aggravated sexual assault of a 9 year old ... can he live that close to a school??? WTF?! ) I saw a father tonight at a restaurant that was too busy talking to his buddy to take proper care of his daughter. She looked about 5, and he sent her to the other end of the restaurant to use the restroom ... by herself. She didn't know better and went in the men's. A father and young son went in shortly after, only to exit quickly (since the restroom is a one-seater). WTH was that father thinking?
