Did anyone catch this last night. I missed the first 30 minutes on the first go round so I watched the replay because i knew they would talk about the first Duke game in Dec 0f 91. sure enough they did, still remember watching that game. anyway its so funny how the world of college basketball has changed. i forgot how special it was for that team to reach two finals appearances at such a young age, because now they all leave so early that all the teams are young. people look at them as a disappointment but they surely would have one title if webber stays for his junior year. also forgot how awesome that guy was in college.
It was pretty good. I didn't really follow college basketball at that time and it was interesting hearing about the impact and problems that team faced. After all these years Chris Webber didn't want to participate. Guess he just didn't want to relive all that again.
It was well done and pretty darn gripping HOWEVER it made the Fab 5 seem like victims and Michigan/NCAA as the villain which isn't exactly how it happened. Which is okay because it was produced by Jalen Rose, so I was expecting that kind of slant. I thought the UNLV doc on HBO was better and a bit more revealing.
wish i would have seen the UNLV doc, i would imagine it would be more involved because Tark was involved in some complicated issues. I don't think it was too slanted, however its always hard to believe kids don't receive more cash from boosters. they didn't go into too much detail on the rose arrest although I tended to believe his story. he was pretty harsh on webber about throwing the booster under the bus
I watched the first hour and will finish it tonight. Even with the rules violations, they are still a fascinating story because of the culture change they caused in basketball. Interesting to see all the hate mail and I somehow never knew that Jimmy Walker was Rose's father. I thought it was funny when Jimmy King said something about people not knowing how to deal with five kids from the ghetto. Whatever, Jimmy, you were in Plano before Michigan. At the time I thought Rose would be the best player from that group. Webber was an obvious can't miss and plhysically he was perfect for a PF, I just thought he would be more like a Coleman/wasted potential kind of guy. Rose seemed to have the flash, charisma, and all around game to be more of a star. Howard was a shock in the beginning, then returned to about as expected - a solid, not great pro.
True true, I was expecting a much more pro-Fab 5 vibe and it wasn't too bad. I just think they tried to justify taking money from Ed Martin as a goodwill deed a bit too much, those fools knew what they were doing. Agree, Rose killing Webber was pretty shocking and can't wait to see if Webber replies Tuesday on NBA TV or Thursday on TNT. I'd imagine he'd keep quite but Rose was pretty harsh on him.
I knew this although I never really knew who walker was. i always assumed that walker had problems given rose's situation. never knew he just never knew him
He'll also be bombarded with questions that he wants no part of, regarding the money and the timeout he took. I have to give him props for not ratting out whoever it was that made the timeout signal from the bench, and instead just shouldered the blame himself to this day. Also, it somewhat gave away at an early age that Webber doesn't have the mental fortitude to carry a team to the promise land. When asked by a reporter how it'll affect him if they lose a 2nd NCAA final in a row, Webber had that burdened look on his face and said "I'll be devastated." Not all his fault at his age, but I suspect you'd get a different response from a 19 year old Kobe or Jordan.
I caught the last 45 minutes or so. I read a WashPo article critical of Rose and his Duke Uncle Tom comments, but missed it in the program.
rose said he felt kids at duke were uncle toms, it was a chip on his shoulder when he was at Mich, 20 years ago. I don't think he meant to imply that to this day
Rose did make an excellent point, most sports fans can't remember who one the national championship in prior years but EVERYONE remembers that starting five. UNLV had the same effect, everyone remembers their starting five also.
I have it recorded, need to watch it one of these days. I remember watching the game live and was like WTF.
More like a path down the memory lane from the perspectives of the players. And I'm sure we all agree that NCAA has some of the most consistent and fair rules known to man.
Since you didn't seem to have watched the film, I'll point out something for you that was mentioned. Only Chris Webber out of the Fab Five was found to had taken significant money from Ed Martin.
Saw the last hour. Very well done. They sort of drilled a hole through Chris Webber. I didn't realize what actually happened on the timeout until last night. It explains Webber's immediate on-court reaction. Wouldn't have mattered if they had called him for traveling like they should have.
