I cannot imagine them doing this. Why don't they federalize and train the security first? How about recognition software to help the security personal ID items in bags? It appears that the box cutters were stashed on the planes beforehand - how about dealing with tarmac security? What about all of the bags and mail loaded in the belly of the plane?

There are so many things more important that would be more effective, yet our carryons are a easy target.

Quite honestly, I was surprised that they did not immediately ban carry-ons after the attack. I thought that they would and then slowly work back to allowing them.

I could see a temporary ban.

I wonder if they didn't implement one since it is unproven that anything was smuggled on by the terrorists themselves.

I've always thought carry-on luggage should be banned, but not for safety reasons. I wanted it gone because people take so much time getting their crap together (and trying to lug huge bags on-board the plane even though there is no place to put them) that the plane invariably gets delayed.

My theory is that at least 50% of all airline delays are caused by carry-on luggage.

But they'll never be able to ban it completely. How could you? Are you going to prevent people from carrying purses? How about diaper bags for babies? And so on and so on. It's just really not possible to do away with carry-on luggage completely. And I don't think doing away with carry-on luggage would necessarily make the planes any safer (knowing what we do know about how this attack was carried out, etc.)

Why would you want a temporary ban, unless its to increase security/training/better equipment? Thats our problem, we get lax in our security, and thats when they will hit us.

    MrPaige,

For every bag not brought, thats just less of a change for them to get something on. Im sure there would be a few exceptions like you said. People would be able to bring on their laptops, books, mags, ect ...

I think the ban should only apply to Middle Eastern passengers, cause we all know they are the only ones that would ever hijack an airplane.

You don't think I could've gotten a knife on-board on Sept 11th even if carry-on luggage were banned? Especially if we have to set up a huge list of exceptions. Purses are okay, diaper bags are okay. Laptops are okay, etc. That's just more ways that a would-be hijacker could get a weapon on-board.

It's just not practical to ban carry-in luggage and wouldn't put a dent in making planes safer.

How about allowing carryons, but locking the overhead compartments once their stowed? Only a flight attendant would be able to open them.
