Does anyone own or have any experience with external dvd burners? I was considering buying one, but I'm not exactly sure what types of features or brands I should consider.

If going externel, hell, even internal, i would recommend Plextor burners. They're pretty much top of the line burners and you cant really go wrong with them.

I have a laptop with a dvd playback/cd-rw drive already in it...I figure getting an external dvd writer would make the most sense.

I have one of these external DVD burners from Sony and it's worked great. I've burned around 25 DVD's in the last few days and it's worked great.

External, build it yourself, go with a drive and an enclosure from Froogle. I used a Pioneer 109

I am using lite-on. Got it for $82 a few weeks ago from NEWEGG.com.

Other solid and reasonably priced brand: BenQ, Plexator, Pacific Digital

Sony as always is way overpriced.
