Expert: Robots Will Fight Wars of Future

Robots will fight the wars of the future, a prominent military expert told an audience of luminaries Wednesday.

"We are at a point of revolution in war, like the invention of the atomic bomb," writer and Brookings Institution fellow Peter W. Singer said during his address at the TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference meeting this week in Long Beach, Calif., according to Agence France-Presse.

Drawing on material from his just-published book "Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century," Singer said the rapid development of military robots, already used as drones and bomb defusers, might mean that U.S. combat units would be half human, half machine by 2015.

Unfortunately, he added, we wouldn't have much of a head start.

"In technology there is no such thing as a permanent advantage," Singer, recently a defense-policy adviser to the Obama presidential campaign, told the audience. "You have Russia, China, Pakistan and Iran working on military robots."

He also fears that machine will be more ruthless killers than soft-hearted humans.

"You don't have to convince robots they are going to get 72 virgins when they die to get them to blow themselves up," said Singer.

FWIW- IN case it turns into a D&D topic, this was started in the Hangout.

So much for believing in something enough to fight for it, huh? :)

On one hand, I think this is a good thing. I'd rather a robot be destroyed than someone's son, father, husband, brother, daughter, mother, wife.

But if we could figure out how to stop hating each other so much, that might be productive and less costly...in terms of money and in terms of our lives.

As long as religion is around, war will be as well I believe.

This is a terrible idea. It's only a matter of time before the robots turn on us and start a war with their human masters.

Why would robots ever be at war with humans? They have no egos, no material needs, no religious imperative?

The article on Ray Kurzweil in this month's Rolling Stone has some cool predictions about AI.

I think the concern is more about robots programmed to kill humans. No emotion. No mercy.

    War bots. Yea.

I'm not surprised the military is going that way. A gun mounted on a vehicle of some sort and controlled remotely can engage the enemy while not endangering a soldier. Sounds good. This article didn't really talk about autonomous killing machines, though.

p.s. what a dumb editorial choice for a photo. Robots for war aren't going to look like people. :) You will be terminated!

The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is clear: To build and maintain those robots.

where did you ever get such ridiculous ideas? how are they going to defeat us, set off an nuclear exchange? pssh...it takes a robot that's "aware" to do that. like that will ever happen. and what would they want with us, use us as batteries? absurd. if necessary, we can put in safe guards against them harming us... maybe even three. that should be enough.

Robot soldiers do have a handy use; if the right people are directing them then the Geneva Convention may never be violated again.

too bad the "right people" are far and few in this world.
