I think the Calvin and Hobbes Treasuries would be among my favorite pieces of literature.

You might try Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan.

Also William Gibson has some interesting stuff out there....take a look at Neuromancer.

Or give Charlie Huston a look if your into pulp fiction....Caught Stealing...never a dull moment.

I just finished Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell. It's pretty cool too...makes you never want to end up in a hospital.

The "best" is too hard. Here's a random sampling of some great books not already mentioned:

Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Garcia-Marquez
As I Lay Dying by Faulkner
    The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald
    I, Claudius by Robert Graves
    Midnight's Children by Rushdie

My favorite book is probably Notes From Underground. It's a fairly short read but its so good. This is more of a short story but I like The Dream Of A Ridiculous Man by Dostoevsky too. I've never read two stories like them before, or anyone that can resemble Dostoevsky's writing style. It's so unique. His other works are kind of hit or miss for me. The Brothers Karamazov was too big of a read for me and too depressing. Crime & Punishment was similar for me but those are two other famous works from him.

Another short story here but The Star by Arthur C. Clarke.

    Ana Karenina by Tolstoy

Cosmos and Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan

East of Eden and almost anything by Steinbeck

    Harry Potter series

Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. The Similarion if you're a big enough fan of the series.

    and of course Harry Potter

I've seen of the classics mentioned, but if you're looking for stuff that's a bit more recent...

    The Kite Runner-Khaled Hosseini
    Oryx and Crake-Margaret Atwood
    The Things They Carried-Tim O'Brien

I haven't met an intelligent person that has not avidly read Calvin and Hobbes as a child. The 85$ complete collection is a worthwhile investment.

As far as non-classic recommendations, I will throw in
    Old School by Wolff
    Tipping Point by Gladwell
