Horry won three NBA titles with Lakers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press SAN ANTONIO -- Free-agent forward Robert Horry has agreed to a contract with the San Antonio Spurs, according to a broadcast report. Horry Horry, who spent the last 6½ seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and helped them to win three straight NBA championships, agreed to a one-year contract with a club option for a second year, Houston television station KRIV reported Tuesday night. Neither Spurs spokesman Tom James nor Horry's agent, Carl Poston, returned messages left by The Associated Press on Tuesday night. Horry struggled last season, when he averaged 6.5 points and missed 36 of 38 3-pointers during the playoffs. His last 3-point miss, at the end of Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals against San Antonio, would have given the Lakers a victory and a lead in the series. Instead, the Lakers lost and the Spurs went on to win the NBA title. During Horry's 11-year NBA career, he has been on five NBA championship teams, including two with the Houston Rockets.
Very good move for the Spurs. I believe that Robert still has some game left in him. He will be closer to home and his family. Glad that he can do that. I will always be a Robert Horry fan.
"Horry settled for a two-year, $9 million deal from San Antonio - with the second season at the Spurs' option. Horry, who turns 33 next month, didn't figure to re-sign with the Lakers once they landed power forward Karl Malone. Horry is joining the defending-champion Spurs, signing for $5 million next season - almost the same amount the Lakers declined to give Horry when they did not exercise their option. Horry, who turns 33 next month, didn't figure to re-sign with the Lakers once they landed power forward Karl Malone. Horry signed his new contract Tuesday and plans to deliver it to the Spurs today. Horry had plenty of dramatic moments in his 61/2 seasons with the Lakers, but he fizzled in the 2003 postseason. Horry missed his last 24 three-point shots of the playoffs, setting an NBA record, and said later: "I let everybody who loves the Lakers down." Now, Horry jumps to the Spurs to back up Tim Duncan and give San Antonio the inside dope on stopping the Lakers' triangle offense. Horry wanted to play in Texas, where there is no state income tax, or return to the Lakers. His family resides in Houston year-round. Neither Dallas nor the Lakers stepped up with a comparable offer. Because of the retirement of center David Robinson, the Spurs had plenty of salary-cap space this offseason. They couldn't get guard Jason Kidd or big men Jermaine O'Neal, Elton Brand, P.J. Brown or Malone to come, but they did land former Minnesota center Rasho Nesterovic. Now they have Horry, who averaged 6.5 points and 6.4 rebounds last season.
I wonder if this improves our chances of signing Piatkowski, because last week it was reported that he would either go to Houston or SA. I assume the Spurs still have enough money, but wouldn't they rather have Stephen Jackson than Piatkowski?
