A superseding indictment, dated Wednesday, charges Sampson with mail fraud and making a false statement. A trial scheduled for May 16 on previous charges of perjury and making a false claim will instead be an arraignment on the new counts. U.S. District Judge James R. Spencer likely will set a new trial date at the arraignment. Sampson, who lives near Atlanta, is accused of lying about his financial situation to a federal court in Georgia to obtain court-appointed counsel. Sampson made his first court appearance in Georgia after being charged with child-support violations in Virginia. Sampson already has pleaded guilty in federal court in Richmond to charges of failing to pay court-ordered child support for two children who live in northern Virginia and have different mothers. Sentencing in that case was delayed after Sampson was charged with perjury. The new indictment alleges that when Sampson went to court on the child-support charges, he claimed he was self-employed by "Sampson Communications" and had no income. According to the indictment, Sampson was earning $5,000 per month as a consultant for one company and made commercials and promotional appearances for another in exchange for a $200,000 home. Sampson also allegedly denied he owns a $43,000 sport utility vehicle, which he purchased using a corporate identity, and allegedly sent documents regarding the SUV from Georgia to Virginia for the purpose of defrauding a financing company. Sampson remains free on bond with travel restrictions. The Houston Rockets made Sampson the No. 1 overall pick in the 1983 NBA draft. Over nine NBA seasons, Sampson averaged 15.4 points per game.
If the guy really made over $260,000 last year and he's trying to get a lawyer paid for by tax dollars to avoid paying child support - well, I'd say that's pretty effed up and he SHOULD be in trouble. Regardless of the fact that he used to be a Rocket.
Well Ralph Sampson was the most athletic center above 7 feet 2 inches to ever play the game. Just watch some of his games from the early years before his knees gave out and you can see why he was hyped so much. houston has always had a history of great centers and its natural to compare our latest center, who's 7 feet 5 inches to the guy was just an inch shorter. The guy could flat out play and was given the most inane and unreasonable expectations ever. He was supposed to be the Jordan of the league, the guy who was supposed to be the greatest of all time. If he could have just stayed healthy and not have has knees give up on him, then the Rockets could have easily given the Bulls a run for their money during the 90s. In fact you could go as far as to say, we could have owned that series too. We were already doing a decent job with them with what we had at the time but a Sampson would have been a matchup nightmare. They already didn't know how to defend Hakeem and Ralph would've made things just that much harder.
Dude, that's like, a career average... Yao's in top shape now, there's no point in comparing. Maybe you can take a look at Sampson in his best season, and then make a conclusion.
wow dude, you shouldn't mention yao in this thread in the first place. but that's completely wrong. first four seasons Ralph Sampson: 20 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 2.75 apg, 2.0 bpg. Yao:17.5 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.8 bpg both four time all-stars. Ralph > Yao at this point.
And Ralph Sampson has LEAD his team to the NBA finals. Yao hasn't passed the first round. Ralph Sampson was the All-Star MVP. He average 4 assits in the playoffs run . He averaged 16.5 rebounds in another. He made the most difficult, important, dramatic and famous clutch shot in NBA history. He was also involved in one of the most brutal fights in NBA history. lol Dude is a legend.
Yao will eventually have a better career than Ralph (keeping fingers crossed that his legs don't give away like it did for Ralph), but comparing the Yao from his first 4 seasons in the league to Ralph when we drafted him, Ralph was definitely a better player.

Yes, if you played good basketball for the rockets, you shouldn't be held to the same legal standards as other mortals. Besides, Ralph is too dumb to know how much money he made.
