Apparently,

Compaq is one of two finalists for naming rights to the stadium. Since their merging with Hewlett-Packard, I guess it won't be called Compaq Stadium or Compaq Field. Besides, we already have Compaq Center.

I wish stadiums didn't have to be named after companies. I'll tell ya...it's so much fun to go to a stadium named after a company .

    Here's the story .

So, is the new Rockets arena going to be called Hewlett-Packard Arena and the ballpark Hewlett-Packard Field or Stadium. How gay indeed! I wish they could name the arenas/ballparks something spiffy and just put their stupid ass advertisements everywhere...like they do already. Oh well....I guess the name isn't what makes the experience....but it still SUCKS ASS.

    Landry's? Welcome to our restaurant...er...ballpark. :)

I think it would probably end up being HP Field, which to me, is fine.

Compaq Center probably won't change its name. The cost would be prohibitive considering their naming rights deal runs out in 2003 and they won't renew because Lakewood is moving their church in there.

The downtown arena would get new naming rights and it sounds like Conoco/Phillips might be top of the list considering they were probably the other contender for Astros Field. I would think that whoever loses the bid for the ballpark will turn their attention to the arena.

Actually with the merge I believe HP's new ticker symbol will be HPQ. They may name the field HPQ field . Which would not be very appealing. HP field is ok but i think they should go with stadium for either one.

It would rival the Dell Dimension.

i can tell you emphatically conoco is not involved in either: they're merging, and the phillips side isn't the least bit interested in ponying up the money both teams are asking.

plus, they've got the HR pump in astros field, which gets as much exposure, if not more, than the stadium name.

Locally, perhaps, but not even close on a national scale.

    COPIES RULE!!!

I guess Hewlett-Packard House of Baseball is a little better than Preparation H-Dome.

and Astros Field had such a nice ring to it. . .

Really? This was in the article:

Executives of Houston-based Conoco are continuing discussions with the Astros regarding naming rights, said company spokesman Ed Burke.

Merger talks haven't stopped HP and Compaq from discussing. I can't imagine it would stop Conoco/Phillips.

What would the reaction be if somebody tried to change the name of Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park to some corporate crap? I hate this.

The main difference is that these places don't have that history behind them, but I essentially agree. Fact is that this is capitalism at work. Naming rights pay big bucks and teams want that coin.

You mean like Wrigley Field or Busch Stadium? Take a look at film/pictures from the 20's-40's, they had ads plastered on every available inch of stadium interiors back then. This is not a recent phenomenon, it's just that the $$$ amounts have a lot more zeros after them. Baseball has always been run in order to maximize profits for the owners, the only difference now is that the players make serious $$$ too.

    I can imagine it...

    I'd like to name them:

    Yankee Stadium = Tampax Gardens

Fenway Park = MadDog 20/20 Park

yes. without saying too much, someone very close to me works with ed burke; conoco's not a player -- the asking price is simply too high.

conoco's in the mix because their CEO is good friends with mcclane -- he's the one who tried to push it, the phillips people squashed it.

apparently, the astros are asking for a lot.

if you're complaining about corporate naming rights, you lose all right to complain about Drayton not spending enough money...this is just another stream of revenue for the Astros to utilize.
