LOL. You buy a box and you get, oh my god, 1 pack with 7 cards. Why don't they just sell you a pack instead. LOL. This is the most ridiculous thing I"ve seen yet from a card company. What a rip off to unsuspecting buyers. Flair ripped me off once with 7 packs in a box, and I thought that was bad, but one pack per box. WTF.

Trading card companies turned me off big time years ago when they started going to these 8 cards per pack for 6 dollar type deals. The first set of overpriced basketball cards I can really remember were either 92-3 or 93-3 Topps Collector's Choice that had the "Beam Team" for the first time. I remember how everyone wanted the Shaq "Beam Team" card and the prices, for the time, were pretty dang high for a pack! Then what pissed me off is when that one card company came out with the line of cards that had the plastic wrap on the card and if you took it off then the card was devalued!

i used to have wet dreams about getting that shaq beam team in a pack. a couple of my childhood friends bought the card on eBay last year just to fulfill a childhood fantasy.

i will probably do this one day too.

I love those guys that pitch cards on the home shopping channel.

"This deal is outrageous!!! TWENTY BOXES! JUST THREE WAX PACKS ALONE COVERS THE COST OF THIS!!! (opens a pack) LOOK - A JIM MINT HONUS WAGNER!!!"

And they always have that shady-sounding guy calling from the warehouse that says they have to move the goods. Great show. :)

You think 6 dollars a pack is outrageous..I still collect now but i have slowed up a bit..but there are packs that are about $500 a pack...you get 5 cards, but all the cards in the pack are guaranteed autographs or limited edition.

Like the lebron/jordan autograph from the set that is numbered 1/1 so only one of them is out there went for like 30,000.

    It's really getting crazy.

I remember the good ol' days where you could go buy a 36-pack box for like $15 and the best card in the set was the Jordan parallel. Those were the days. And now the companies have all those $10 packs for 4 cards...no wonder most kids don't collect basketball cards anymore.

I have a bunch of old baseball cards; I need to get around some day and find out their market value.

Oh hell yes. I remember those... a friend and I must've driven for 200-300 miles over a weekend around the Houston area looking for those boxes. I think we ended up getting a couple of Beam Teams, but no Shaq. I look back and think what a moron I was to spend money on that crap.

I remember I think Todd Harvey or his dad telling me that some guy either sold or was looking to sell his car to get the Beam Team Shaq or that and some other cards. Unreal.

Of course now I want to go back and get some rookie cards of Olajuwon's and others. ;)

Heh. I plan to do that for the Fleer rookies of Olajuwon, drexler and barkley some day soon.

Its just that everytime I go to eBay to do this, i fee like a damned fool, seeing as how i stopped collecting 10 years ago.

I'd rather spend the money now on new electronics!

but one day... i will overcome this mental obstacle!

Two things happened in 1992: I got a girlfriend, and card companies started adding "insert" collections into packs.

    I never collected again.

    lol

You can blame upperdeck for coming out with 100 sets a year....with different level of inserts.

For real. Those card companies shifted their focas from appealing to kids to appealing to nostalgic adults that try to recapture their childhood. But they are really just shooting themselves in the foot, because they're killing the interest for the next generation.

    "Inserts" were fine.

"1 per box special inserts" were also fine

"Upper Deck SP 6 bucks a pack" was still not horrible

    "Autographics" were cool

"Game Jerseys" were also nice but got out of hand

"Graded Cards" turned me off big time.

"3 dollar packs with no chance of getting a decent card" pissed me off a little bit.

"125 dollar packs with 3 cards in them" was the last straw for me.

My best card was a gold embossed Hakeem Olajuwon card.....dont know if its the most expensive one Ive got....but it was like THE card I wanted.

It was in a hobby shop for months....the people in the place knew I wanted it. I ended up getting it for Christmas and its on the first page on my card folder.

Like people here....I stopped collecting when the price to buy a back of cards went through the roof.

I still have over 375 different Hakeem cards, my prized piece being a 98 skybox autographics.

I feel like I missed out so much in my childhood by not collecting trading cards or comic books or the myriad other things large groups of people collected as kids.

Plus, I don't have one of those stories about how much my collection would be worth had my mother not thrown it out.
