I don't. I think Yao would develop better under tutelage of a retired finesse center like Hakeem or Kareem. IMHO, Ewing was never great. He was big.

I am no big Ewing fan, but I think he was a little better than just "being big" out there. Give the guy some credit, he could play.

When he played, I can't think of a single time that I watched him make a shot and I thought to myself, "Wow! Nice move!"

Who cares if Ewing was great? He only needs to be a teacher. Is the only way to be a teacher is if you are great? Avery Johnson is not a hall-of-famer so the Mavs should dump him immediately. (I wish they would. :) ) What about all the NBA coaches that never played in the NBA? Your logic is flawed.

Picking a coach for Yao doesn't have much to do with past accomplishments. What's more important is the understanding of BB fundamentals and the ability to communicate them.

That might be your opinion but it isn't held by many! Ewing has never been attached to the Rockets he is only using his tenure as a stepping stone. Yao Ming need a coach with Rocket Red Blood in his veins.

I would give him a severance now and buy his plane ticket.

While you might be correct, when has Hakeem ever indicated any interest in coaching? Isn't Kareem on the Lakers coaching staff? (as he should be)

I'm sure there are plenty of big man coaches out there without that kind of name, but I've never really understood why people think Patrick Ewing is a lousy coach. We have absolutely no way of knowing what he has or hasn't taught Yao. Nevermind they say he isn't here just to coach Yao, but to be an assistant coach for the team.

I would pitch in for the plane ticket, too, if he needs the help. He does spend a lot of money.

The sooner he leaves, the better. I never could stand him or his game. Seeing him every night on our bench sickens me.

    Awesome reference.

I am in the "Pat Ewing sucks" camp, as well. I couldn't stand his game, and it was pure joy to watch Dream school him like a JV girl back in '94.

Again, what does that have to do with Ewing's ability to teach Yao?

Other than saying "Ewing sucks," can somebody give me a legitimate source that illustrates that he is a terrible coach? I didn't think so.

But coaching a team is different than coaching a player.

How can Ewing teach Yao how to build finesse shots? He can't- because he doesn't know squat about building finesse shots. He can teach Yao how to muscle his way into the lane and dunk, and that's okay... but it's not Yao's game. It takes away from Yao's natural game (finesse) and tries to fit him into a different role (grunt force).

You're right. They haven't. I was just using them as examples. And, you're right also that there aren't an abundance of retired finesse centers available to coach Yao, and this is just about the only legitimate argument for having Ewing as Yao's coach- " 'cause there's nobody else"

Let his ass go then...he obviously would rather be there with that response.

    "You'd have to ask them."

That sounds like an answer from a guy that really wants to be here.
