    80's to early 90's

Comedy back then still had some innocence... cursing was minimal

    90's

jim carrey with his off the wall humor and robin williams trying to touch people's hearts with comedy ruled this decade

What do you guys think about the evolution of comedy?

What are the reasons you think that comedy has changed so much?

Which era of comedy did you guys most prefer?

Although Judd Apatow's movies are different than the other movies you mentioned, I wouldn't categorize them as "smart comedy" by any means.

Appatow-produced comedies have the highest hit rate for me:

    Anchorman (10/10)
    40-year old Virgin (8/10)
    Talladega Nights (7/10)
    Knocked Up (9/10)
    Walk Hard (6/10)
    Step Brothers (6/10)
    Pineapple Express (10/10)
    Funny People (7/10)

The changes are probably more about the pop culture changes than anything
Cheech and Chong - the ultimate mar1juana movies
IMO kills stuff like Pineapple Express
    but
    they are similar genres

You know, comedy existed and evolved before the 1980's.

I'd say that 'Black' comedy came of age with Bill Cosby and Richard Prior. Then came along Eddie Murphy in the 80s, and then the Wayans brothers in the Early 90s.

God, nothing will ever beat Chaplin in my book. I've seen that movie so many times, and I still laughed my ass off at that clip.

it's true, comedy in cinema was born in the 80's and only comic films that fit the OP's sensibilities are part of this finite discussion.

thanks for the history lesson, McGrady!

    True that.

You had WC Fields, louse, beating the ---- out of dew-eyed children half a century earlier. Really kinda screws up the OP's innocence of the past movie notions.

Aristophanes might be surprised that Comedy started in the 1980's.

Honestly I hate to sound like an old crank but you really need to learn some history. To follow Tinman this is like thinking the Rockets started with Francis.

Vulgar and sexual comedy have been around for centuries and IMO Adam Sandler is one of the poorest at it. As far as black comedy perhaps Richard Pryor rings a bell. If you want vulgar and sexual he was way better than Adam Sandler.

If you are just talking about Comedy movies Mel Brooks was doing vulgar and sexual long before guys like Judd Apatow.

frankly, your list is offensive to anyone growing up in the 80's or 90's. even the ones you chose are cookie cutter representations of Comedy [In Cinema]

more comedy about getting high... you never heard of Cheech & Chong?

Your internet connection was so slow you couldn't name any comedy before the 1980's?
