Everyone talks about how the players have to change... what about JVG?

Everyone knows what the players on the Rockets have to do to improve the team... we have talked about nothing else for as long as I can remember:

Francis - play smarter, always look for the pass, take good shots, run the break better
Mobley - pass more, gain consistency
Yao - be more aggressive, get stronger
Everyone Else - hit the open shots, rebound better

One thing we haven't talked about much is what kind of adjustments JVG has and will have to make.... everyone knows that you can't coach every player and every team the same way. You have to maximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses to win games.

I think that over the next few weeks as the pressure cooker simmers we might see JVG start to experiment more. Jeff mentioned in another thread that JVG said Yao has to learn to play the low post efficiently before he moves him into the high post.... well, his shooting percentage has dropped from .498 last year to .485 this year. How long is he going to stick with that story? I also remember JVG saying that it was time to win now and there were no excuses. Only an idiot does the same thing over and over again expecting different results.

BTW, I think the most telling statistic of this season is not the assist or turnover numbers from Steve or Cuttino, or the team rebounding, or Cato's confidence quotient.... I think that it is Yao's assist numbers. His assists per 48 minutes have decreased from 2.81 last year to 2.67 this year. The "Next Bill Walton" is getting wasted by Brad Miller who has 7.02 per 48 minutes.

JVG just coached 16 games. There is no need to change anything yet because any new team strategy cannot be established in such a short time.

This is true. I believe JVG will make strides in coaching as the years roll on. But I do also believe that these such strides will coincide with the acquistions of new personel. Van Gundy, for the most part, is playing with a previously dealt hand. I believe he can help to some degree but it ultimately falls back on the players! Every coach will tell you that coaching can only go so far. The players still have to execute. Bottom line.

It's nothing to do with yao, rather players can't finish

The biggest adjustment JVG has to make is how to attack the zone and how to use the zone to defend.

This is the 1st year JVG played against the zone. When he left the Knicks, zone was still illegal.

In some ways, I think zone defense has a negative effect on JVG's performance. Before, teams have to rely on man defense, and JVG is excellent at that. Nowadays, teams can hide behind the zone, reducing the advantage JVG has on defense.

Another impact of zone defense is that it reduces the importance of defensive-oriented players. If you are a player with only defensive ability not much offensive ability, you are not going to do too well in the zone era for two reasons: 1st, teams do not need to rely on a lock-down defender as much; 2nd, role players nowadays have to make the medium-range jumper to beat the zone defense because teams are going to zone on STAR players.

JVG's basketball philosophy might be a little bit outdated now. He mostly likes defensive players on the team, but in the zone era, you can sacrifice a little bit defensive players in order to get the shooters that can bust the zones.

I hope JVG can shift a little bit to an offensive-minded coach and rely on zones more.

Actually I don't know about this
JVG has IMO NEVER been a Great O guy
    just a great X guy

His defensive intensity has been stifling
but on Offense. . . . None of his teams have been powerhouses on offense
Has any of his teams ever averaged above 90 pts a game?

A nice place to start is to fast break more.......then take the ball out of SF's hands......introduce some more "Yao facing the basket plays and shots.......reduce the offensive plays that call for the ball to end up in Cato's hands...and so on and so on. To me it is like a broken record, so I am just going to sit back and see what adjustments are made tonight.

His commitment to defense and his short rotation makes it impossible to reach 90 pts.

A drop of 0.013% FG and 0.14 assist a game ? (Never mind that his actual assists went up)
That is about 1 FG and 1 assist every 6 games!

Darn .... The sky is falling ... let's get a new coach!

Well it was decided this past off-season by Leslie that the players were not the problem, so if there's a problem, it must be the coach.

My dissapointment is that they haven't gone up... not that they have decreased (a neglibible amount).

JVG = Defensive Genius + Offensive ineptitude

CATO guarding AK and shooting 15 footers come on

I like JVG and his intensity, but his offense is ugly.
