I get tired of people bad mouthing Kelvin Cato. The man is a decent back up center. He has a attitude about him that we needed all season and frankly, somone name me any other BACKUP centers you would rather have. Be realistic as well.

I agree. The little things are all I cared about. He was getting two fouls in the first 4 minutes of the game. And to make matters worse he was getting technical fouls because of those calls.

He's since become better at managing his temper and fouls. He's a very good defender.

The main issue with Cato is his 42 million dollar contract.

By the way, I don't know where people get that he was some great scorer in Portland. He was just not scouted as throughly.

Take a look at his career stats with Portland and then compare them to the Rockets.

Also note that in 2001 he got the most minutes. Then comes Yao, and Cato minutes drop back to 17 per game.

P.S. Cato's FT% sucks. But have you ever noticed that he's able to hit his FT at the end of the game?

Cato plays better when he's pissed off, and when the game is on the line.

I don't think people (myself included) would be so hard on him if NBA salaries were kept secret. He took more heat based on his contract (and apparently his tipping habits) than his play, especially this year.

Cato is a very nice complement to Yao off the bench. He's shown all kinds of improvement this year compared to last year. I think it's mostly because he has embraced his role as a backup.

    Don't trade him.

Few people say Cato is not good backup center. The thing is there is not enough minutes for him to play to make his money worth. He should be somewhere else playing 35 minutes a game for that money. Rox keeping him and playing him for 12 minutes a game is a waste of the money they pay and a waste of the talent Cato has. Trading him for a quality PF is a win-win solution for everyone. Or train him as PF, at least give it a try.

Cato. The man's popularity has endured a roller coaster ride comparable to the Texas Cyclone. He was awarded that $42 million contract after a tremendous PRESEASON game and those two facts combined with his inability to live up to the expections that that game and contract generated made him the easy target for criticism.

However, the Coming of Yao has changed the way Cato is used and it has increased his value to the team. Trading him a year ago was a popular idea, however there would have been no takers. This year, he has value relative to his contract and it is a possibility.

I used to fret over Cato and his contract. But in the last year with his minutes reduced, his attention focused and his heart discovered, he has been a solid back-up center. Great insurance policy for a "rookie" center. (That is Yao's word not mine.) These days, I do not want to trade him. I like him as the solid back-up. I am also fascinated by the occassional Yao-Cato frontcourt. Could he be our enforcer from time to time? How will JVG use him?

Anyway, I still see a lot of Cato bashing on the board. But for the most part I consider the bashing an echo - people repeating the same stuff over and over from a situation that existed, but no longer does, and the posts reverberate around the board, much like a ripple in a pool. Like an echo it is getting quieter, but because of that game and that contract, Cato will always have his critics.

Props to Cato and his 2002-2003 season - the most satisfying he has had wearing the Red and Gold, err, the Pin-Striped Pajamas.

I think when all is said and done, Cato will be one of the great back-up centers of all time.

Might as well train Cato as PF we don't have another player on this roster who wants to play PF

Does anyone know if he is going to restructure his deal. He is not worth the money he gets.

Those who are picking on Cato are just part of the Jones' group getting jealous whenever someone has something they don't. Cato isn't paying himself; Les is the one spending the money. I think we should be more concerned with his play which was very good last year. And if it wasn't for our miracle #1 pick in Yao then Cato would be starting.

Hey, your neighbor just bought a new car so why don't you go complain about that instead.
