Evidentally you are unaware that a DVR is basically a cpu recording in mpeg/4 or other traditional digital video format? Any software for the computer that simulates a DVR is only limited in file format and resolution by its coding, not the fact is exists on a computer.

Windows media center is the answer to all questions you have. Media center is down right amazing. I use it.

Amazing is a stretch, but it's OK. I do 99.9% of my television watching with it.

With ad ons, it does everything a DVD would. I can remove commercials, run tv with a sleep timer and even record in HD. What more could you want?

If you have a TV Tuner card, how would you get the digital channels?

For instance, would I have to use a cable box between the line and the PC?

What do you use to actually get the signal? This needs a tv tuner as well right?

yes unless you had one that had cable card connectivity.

most of the time these setups for for media center PCs, not generally desktops so having the cable box near it shouldnt be an issue.

I am thinking about it for my office first...and would like to get rid of the DVR I pay $10 extra a month for to record shows.....

How would you get it to record shows on two different channels?

Like say I wanted to record the Rockets game on channel 920 and American Pickers on 1626 at the same time, is that possible?

Huh? What add-ons are you talking about?

Is there a way to sync my U-Verse remote or Window Media Player remote and control both my box and WMP with one remote?

Chopped referenced it, but here's more reading (a starting point, at least) on CableCARD:

What I haven't been able to figure out is...

    Comcast sends an encrypted feed.
    Uverse sends an encrypted feed.
    DirectTV sends an encrypted feed.

How is anybody using a PVR, except for recording OTA signal?

You synchronize the guide listings with your cable company's listings, and schedule the program to record on your PC just like you would TiVo. I've done that type of recording with the 2006 World Cup on my PVR. It recorded a DiwreckTV feed. I never recorded two shows at once, though. I recorded with OTA signal before the digital transition with the same card. I've had the same TV tuner card since 2004. It doesn't receive a nondigital signal, so I'm stuck with only cable or VCR recordings until I upgrade.
