I just adopted my first dog from the Chihuahua Rescue and Transport Organization.

    http://www.chihuahua-rescue.com/

Anyway, I already have one Chihuahua named Nikki, bought from a breeder, with papers, etc. But I had looked around for a playmate for Nikki for a while. I stumbled into the rescue organization (they have these for all types and breeds of dog) on the internet, and began to search for a dog I liked.

I found several, and a few that I expressed interest in got adopted right before I had a chance to get the process going.

They took an application from me, and anytime you see a dog you wish to adopt, you email them. Quick responses too. The great thing about this organization is that they actually send someone to your house to check and make sure the conditions are right for a Chi, and they also have a phone interview as well. They really go out of their way to make sure these little dogs get a good home. They have the dog spayed or nuetered, they are current on all vaccinations when you get them, and they are heart worm checked and on preventative. These people are volunteers also, no monetary compensation whatsoever.....only the satisfaction of helping the abandoned, injured, or soon-to-be euthanized dogs.

Well, I adopted Coco, a chocolate and tan female, about 1.5 yrs. old, and just over 5 lbs. She seems to be a great tempered dog, and so far, outside of some posturing and territorial behavior, it looks as though the dogs will be great pals.

Anyway, these organizations do great things for these animals. If you are looking for a dog, any breed, search on the net for the rescue group for that breed. I would do this again in the future to help an animal in need, and put puppy mills out of business.

Citizens for Animal Protection is a great organization as well. This is a no kill shelter. If you can't adopt a pet, they have a foster parent program where you can take the pet home until a permanent home can be found. They are on the Katy Freeway out by all the car dealerships. While in law school I couldn't have a pet, but every couple of weeks I would go and play with the animals for a few hours. It was theraputic for all involved.

I plan on using one for my next dog, hopefully another basset hound. It's great because you get to give the dog a home, plus you can get one that's already housebroken, etc. Puppies are a pain!

Be nice to the good folks working with the animals!

I have some experience on the other side of the desk, and you'd be amazed how many people are downright rude to the volunteers.
