This is really heartbreaking news. I sincerely hope something will come down the pike - a misdiagnosis, early recovery, or a reconsideration of retirement given the circumstances - which could alter this situation. It seems unlikely, but Charles has absolutely had a Hall Of Fame career, and deserves to go out on a more positive note.

Here's to you Charles: if it is the end, thanks for the memories. Hoepfully it wont be. We will miss you.

It is so ironic that it would end in Philly.

Thats a horrible way to go out of the game. I really hope that we go into the lotto because if we were even to remotely come close to the finals Charles will always be left with what-ifs. I really hope he doesn't go out like this he deserves one more try. Man now I wish we traded him to Portland at least then he would have gotten a shot at the title. Well if this was his last game at least we all had the privelage to watch him before politcs. This just makes me hate Scottie Pippen even more

Chuck is a class act. This sucks. But knowing Barkley, he'll find a way to turn this around for good. The great ones always do.

    Thanks for the memories, Chuck!

mildly off topic, but Cabbage i had to say that i have never heard "Snottie" before! I can't believe it, because it is by far the most appropriate moniker for that guy. way better than quitten et al.

You all know how I've grown tired of Barkley as of late... But, I must say that I'm totally in shock over this. It's sad to see anyone go thru something like that, much less a guy who's as much fun to watch as Barkley is.

On the other hand, as sad as it is, it only serves to hasten the arrival of the inevitable... The Rockets will need to learn to live without Barkley now, as they were going to have to anyway. At least if he'd stayed around, his on-the-court tutelage could have been so valuable to the younger guys (like... the rest of the TEAM!!!).

Chuck, you are going to be missed. Thanks for the memories!

Well, Hakeem, it's your team once again. Time to step up and show that you've still got something left in the tank.

The thing that hurts the most is this is a career threatning injury even if Barkley was not going to retire. It hurts even more that we witnessed Barkley's last game tonight.

Ramadan (Hakeem's month of fasting) begins tomorrow.

Well, folks, I've been labeled a "Barkley-basher" and "Anti-Barkley", but I would never wish an injury on any player.

I've enjoyed watching Charles' career. I've been amazed at his ability to rebound without the luxury of being 6'10". I've admired his fire. I've been entertained by his on the court and off the court antics.

Sure, I'm not his biggest fan, but he was a Rocket. And I love my Rockets. I wasn't all for the trade that brought him here, and I haven't always liked what he brought to our team.

But, I am thankful that he played in Houston, because it gave me a chance to see him play more. It may have been near the end (and now the final end) of his career, and maybe that's why I always expected more out of him.

To sum it up, I am sad to see him go. I may not have been all that overjoyed to see him come to Houston, but all I ever wanted him to do is play better. I never wanted him to leave. Now he's gone...

This is NOT the way I want to see our players end their careers...

Well, I've also been labelled as a "Barkley-detractor/basher". Ironically, in my last post on this bbs, I was enumerating the reasons why I thought the trade for him was bad in the first place.

But I am a Rocket fan first!

As such, I am deeply saddened by the loss of one of our players. In spite of my criticisms of him, I had great respect for him. I've always admired his no-nonsense attitude, his offensive fire, and his ability to mix it up with the giants of the league.

Also, in spite of my criticisms of him, I'll be proud, when his retired jersey number is hanging from the rafters.
