Anyone ever gotten one of these? Today, my home phone rings and this conversation takes place... Caller: Hello, my name is Ginger and I have accepted Jesus Christ as my personal savior and I hope you have too. (at this point, I'm not sure if this is a recording or an actual person so I just pause...) Caller: Hello? Me: Uh, yes? Caller: I'm calling to spread the gospel. Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior? Me: Ummmmm...no thank you. (click, I hang up) This is the wierdest thing I've ever heard. I understand solicitors of products and services or issues and political candidates. But, phoning for Jesus? I wish I had asked her how she got my number or if she was just randomly dialing through the phone book. Anyone else gotten this before???
I have never gotten this, but I am not surprised that this is happening. This reminds me of these small little churches around where I live always coming to my door, inviting me to their revivals, bible studies, etc. except in your case, Jeff, they have now acquired the great art of telemarketing! Seriously, I am a Christian and it is stuff like this that makes me shake my head. I have always felt that people will turn to Christianity when they witness good works by other Christians, not being pressured, whether in person or now on the phone (lol), to think about becoming a Christian. If anything, that is going to turn "prospective" Christians away.
When I was a Christian, we did canvass area neighborhoods door-to-door. I have Jehovah's Witnesses come here pretty regularly. That seems to be fairly common, but I've just never gotten it by telephone before.
Wow, I'm pretty surprised... Now I'm really curious about how they obtain phone numbers... be it random dialing and cold calling or whether they have some sort of list obtained by the same people that spam our inboxes on a constant basis! i would actually like to be called by a solicitor just to find out the answer to this question... but since I only have a cell phone and no landline, I'd have to pay for the call! I wonder how long before someone sues the phone company b/c they feel that religion is being forced on them!
They've attempted to do this with door-to-door soliciting in some places, but you can't ban one group and not another - i.e. you can't just ban salespeople and not religious people or vice versa. It is getting more strict for telephone solicitors as well. In Texas, you can remove yourself from the solicitation list for the state and solicitors are required to remove you from their lists if they are calling from within the state. That doesn't stop national callers, however. This woman sounded like she was calling from her home phone. I don't have caller ID, though, so I can't know for sure. I just found it to be wierd.
Hey, Jeff, that was my ex-wife. I didn't think you'd mind if I sent your number to her for insertion into their database. They will call every six weeks or so until the Second Coming. They will also be calling Mrs.JB separately, so expect a call every 3 weeks or so. Caller ID will be useless. Sorry for the inconvenience...
Wow!! I've never had that one, Jeff....that's just funky...and not exactly a great way to start out that kind of a conversation, quite frankly! The only thing even remotely similar that my church does is distributes fliers in the neighborhoods nearby inviting others to join us for Easter Sunday worship....
