Can't say enough about Adelman's coaching since he took over. I once asked in a thread to the Adelman haters who is a better coach available on the market that they could replace Adelman with - ironically, nobody suggested another coach available on the market to replace Adelman, but the Adelman haters were still quick to complain about him. Anyways, here is my evaluation of Adelman in his first 2 seasons: 2007-2008 season: - 22 game win streak, the second longest win streak ever, and a portion of that win streak without Yao! Our win streak finally succumbed to the eventual 2008 NBA championship team, the Celtics. - Made Bonzi look like a terrific role player, and the Hornets coveted Bonzi so much, they took on Mike James' bad contract. Look at where Bonzi is now. - Got the Rockets 55 wins with Yao out a portion of the season. 2008-2009 season: - Got the Rockets 53 wins, without a healthy TMac for almost all the season. It can be argued that the "unhealthy TMac" even cost us games, as the Rockets played much better without an "unhealthy TMac." Best of all, Adelman had to make last minute game plan changes to cater to TMac's last minute availability, and we still pulled through. - A portion of the 53 wins was done after we traded our long term PG in Rafer Alston, an impromptu trade that even caught Yao by surprise. Nevertheless, Adelman had us prepared with Brooks/Lowry for game after game, despite losing the PG that ran our offense for the last half decade. - Got us to the second round of the playoffs without a healthy TMac. - Took a depleted Rockets roster, with 40 million of the roster sitting on the bench (at least when TMac was at the games), with Yao missing the last 4 games of the series, and took the most favored team to win the NBA championship to a 7 game series. Not to mention we lost our other biggest advantage against LA's size in Deke. - Despite all the Adelman haters who suggest Adelman can't coach defense, our defense was at its best during the playoffs, and we played like an elite defensive team in the playoffs.
great thread... lol at how all the adelman haters couldn't come up with another coach to replace him with...
Hehe, has to be a coach available on the market. I suppose that means JVG doesn't apply because I believe he signed a contract extension with ESPN.
Adelman has done a very good job with this team. Seems like after Rafer was traded (which coincided with McGrady being officially out for the season), Adelman really found his stride with playing rotation decisions, the team found an identity (as a tough, gritty, take-no-prisoners defensive squad) and most players (except Brent Barry who needs to retire) performed close to the best of their ability. The real season is the playoffs. The coaching staff did a stellar job against the Blazers and Lakers. I give Adelman an "A". The post-season run was inspiring.
Has won more than 50 games in both seasons even though he had to deal with key injuries. Sure I complain about him sitting through droughts in games but I think he is a very good coach.
Nice thread, I'm so excited about our future with Morey and Adelman in charge and Les giving them unlimited resources
RA will keep having this team play better every season. 50 plus seasons are in the works with him coaching. I believe next season the Rockets will finally win 60 games in a season and that will be a franchise record for a regular season.
I think considering the hand he's been dealt 2 years in a row you really couldn't ask for a better effort. My hat goes off to him
Rick Adelman is an awesome coach. We lucked out getting him after JVG. We've had good caoaching . Now we need to be healthy for a season.
Not really. I'd say he royally outcoached Jackson in this series. Jackson just happened to have far more talent on his team. When a team without its two best players and a 6' 6" offenseless starting center takes you to seven games, you've been royally outcoached.
How can anyone judge Rick Adelman if players are constantly going in and out of the lineup let alone the stars of the team getting injured. I think he did a hell of a job, but for the love of god can we have just one healthy season for once where we make the playoffs.
I like his job, while he is yet to end a season with a full team he has gone deeper than anyone would think.
Great coach, but we haven't seen his entire offense yet simply because of Yao. Aside from adjusting and still having some of the JVG offense in his gameplan. He's done a heck of a job. TWO 50 win seasons despite T-Mac playing half of a season in 09 and Yao play half of a season in 08. He brought in Luis Scola. My biggest problem and concern for Adelman is his ability to manage Yao's minutes. That's about it.
You can't blame him for injuries and Adelman has done a great job. Look forward to him having another great season and finally getting a ring.
I give him an A given the adversity he had to deal with players being in and out of the lineup. Hope he and Morey develop a good chemistry like him and Geoff Petrie did in Portland and Sacramento.
