    Get this.

I don't see how EV1 can compete against the big boys of web hosting like godaddy. EV1 wants $30/month for what you can easily get for $5/month elsewhere. Any bets that within the next year EV1 sells it web hosting customers too?

Since I host a web site with them via a dialup account (even through it has been years since I have dialed up), I guess it is time to find a proper web hosting company.

I'm in the same boat. I'm starting to switch all my email accounts over to my other provider. I kept my EV1 account just for the webspace and ease of not having to transfer email accounts. Now I have a good excuse to finally do it.

I knew the news about it like 2 weeks ago but they just went public about it. It sucks, thank god i left the company last July. I still have friends there that are going to lose their jobs like a week before Xmas. Its sad, I visted them last Saturday, they literally have like only 5 techs, compared to having the normal 20-25 techs a shift, till closing, which they close till like midnight unlike before when they were 24 hours.

For those who don't know, EV1 was bought out by some investors back in April/May in which the same people also bought out "The Planet" based in Dallas and merged the 2 companies. When that happened, I looked for another job QUICK. After working there since March 2000, I left in July and went to work at the Verizon Wireless Call Center after getting a job offer there and Time Warner for Roadrunner Support.

A bunch of us here on the boards use to have a job there including Miguel, seclusion, and aeroman10.

Memories... more than half of my post count was when i was on the job there :p

Sounds like it's time to finally leave EV1 dial up and spring for something better. Might have to go with the Dish network plan.

Noo..what will I do without my dialup :D
Well, dial up is dying..its time for people to move on to DSL, Cable, Wireless Broadband (CDMA/GSM/Etc..)
I worked at EV1 and it was good but I didnt even use the dial up service even though it was free.
I only use the FTP ... sometimes ... I ll just move the files I need to my own site (was trying to save some bandwidth...lol)
It does suck for people who will loose their jobs though.

Does anyone here have a web hosting company that they actually recommend?

I googled "web hosting" and have been overwhelmed by the marketing :(

Friend told me that you get what you pay for. Buyer beware.

Yeah but ISP support from your cable and phone companies is completely lacking. I am being polite.

I havent had much problems with Time Warner.
Pretty much the only time I had to call them is when some idiot would cut the cable line...when mowing the lawn...or digging.

What kind of support do you need? It isn't like hooking up your internet is rocket science.

When the little green Internet light on the modem stops blinking, ...

It appears that RR can not handle the load in my neighborhood during the 9-10 pm time frame (everybody checking their email before bed?).

Catch a new wave at PeoplePC...

    Doesn't have the same ring.

Send the old waves to PeoplePC.

    There, that's better.

    Actually the title is misleading.
EV1 didnt sell the customers to PeoplePC, it seems like they are just recommending PeoplePC. If you dont call EV1 or PeoplePC to actually sign up your account will not be automatically converted and services will be disconnected.

Keep calling and complain. Have them make a note on your acct each time this happens.
That used to happen @ the old place I lived in.
I called them every freaking night - I got about 3 months worth of credit and eventually Time Warner sent a tech crew out at night (because thats when the problem occured) and they fixed it. Prior to that they would just keep sending techs out during daytime when everything worked fine.

That isn't what the FAQ on the homepage says. It says that around Nov. 12 they will convert accounts from ev1 to PPC. You will continue to receive service from PPC at that time. The only people not being converted are those with comp accounts. If you don't want to be switched then you have to call and cancel before Oct. 30.

    Oh ok..
I didnt even go to the site.
I just read the Headsurfer email and followed the link to PPC they had there and it just loooked like they wanted customers to call in and mention the promotion code EV1 to sign up..

I guess they will close my free employee account that they forgot to close when I left them in 2005 ... lol ... :D

[tinman]People that can afford DSL or Cable, but STILL use dialup are cheap! They're holding internet technology back! Seriously, you can get average speed DSL for about $10 more per month that is still 20-30x faster than dialup[/tinman]

Haha, mine's still open as well. I guess I better start saving everything I have hosted.

Dave, if it wasn't for me you'd still be there! :p (ok, maybe not). And see, I told you we'd bring them down by leaving, then everyone following. It blows that all this is happening right before Christmas. At least they're getting some warning though. And I think some severance package.
