http://articles.latimes.com/2010/may/12/nation/la-na-ethnic-studies-20100512 So, I'm guessing the bill is passed in response to some huge increase of Latinos committing violent crimes against white people or at least complaining about them?
I don't think state K-12 schools should have classes geared towards a particular ethnic group either, other than for teaching a new language. The existing social studies programs should be made more diverse, perhaps.
So the big burning problem that motivated this law is that white people are not being respected sufficiently in Arizona?
The more we know about each other the less hate there will be. This is getting sick. Shame on Brewer and her supporters. American Taliban here we come!
so basically this piece says schools should promote diversity because the racist students will react negatively. maybe mlk shouldn't have a had a dream edit: shouldn't
i think we can agree the world would be a better place if he'd just stayed in bed one early April morning.
Living in Houston 4th largest city in the U.S , i have never ever heard of this "Ethnic groups " thing u speak of
Basically, the author of this article says that ignorance is good because it keeps people from recognizing instances of racism, which may make them uncomfortable.
LOL... from a lack of Chicano studies in our schools to the taliban taking over the country. Seems like a logical jump to me!
I never believed public schools should cater towards any particular ethnic group so I think this law is fair.
Ima: I think Taliban Studies are also banned under the 'can't promote resentment' and 'no overthrowing the US government' provisions of this bill. There'll be no tea parties either. And the more vocal members of the Republican party have been asked to respect a bubble zone around the schools.
In a color blind society you wouldn't think twice about a person's race. They would not be a Mexican, a Black, an Asian, a White to you, they'd just be a person. "celebrating" ie pointing out the differences between cultures is the very worst way to achieve a color blind society. But of course that never is the goal of these programs.
what is the goal? I took an African American Studies course at UT and at UofH, I thought at the very least they provided to have an honest dialogue on percieved differences. it would be nice if society was color blind.
