ESPN's RPM data now out

i refuse to believe any stat that has a 3 and d player ahead of an all-world talent like harden

 

I get why they waited so long to release the data. I was expecting a heavier weight on previous seasons this early in the season.

 

This data is all wrong. We all know the best SG in the league should be higher. Kobe should by #1 not #238.

 

I was looking for Dwight, and found him at number 100

How can we be 16-4 with only one guy in the top 50?

 

XRAPM data was generally released at seasons end. I wonder how much ESPN had to pay him to sell his soul to the devil? Small sample size warning people. I have looked into efforts to replicate xRAPM, and it takes a ton of minutes to overwhelm the SSS. Don't put to much stock into it this early in the season.

 

It’s been a while since I read up on how RPM is calculated. I believe there are certain things to factor here. One is that it accounts for prior stats. So Harden’s defense is hurt because in prior years, his defense sucked. And that is calculated into the number. If anything, it’s amazing to see Harden’s DRPM so high simply because of this. Last year his DRPM was the worst in the NBA, a fact Carl Herrera was posting everywhere in the offseason. The other is that it uses age, height, etc. as kind of a predictive measure, which tends to be biased towards bigger players and penalizes for age.

Using prior year stats is not a bad thing. It minimizes luck and simply having a hot stretch. But in the case of the Rockets, it’s clear that there is a huge difference between how we play defense vs. last year. But it will take a while for the numbers to normalize. If Harden keeps this up, his defense RPM should rise as prior terrible D gets less and less important.

 

xRAPM extraneous mathematical formulas applied after the fact, Regressive past seasons involved, lineup Adjusted, Plus, Minus. And then further modified to meet ESPN's requirements. I just do not buy it. That ESPN would include Jones, with what 120 minutes total this season, means that it is some sad bastardization of the stat. RPM is probably approaching a realistic confidence interval for players who have started 15+ games.

 

I'd rather have Morey's statistics. But he will never release them.

Anyway we are sitting at 16-4 with all our injuries. Harden's offense went down a bit esp. at the start of the season with his increased attention to defense. But we all know we would rather have the current Harden than the previous years'.

Let them continue to be puzzled at how we're winning. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

All 10 of the players in the top 10 are having all-star level seasons. That's pretty good accuracy, to me.

 

Wow, did not see that. I thought they would exclude all the players without much playing time, but both Dwight and Jones are in there, as well as Canaan. That's just stupid I agree.

 

Well this is not a stat to tell you who is the best player. It just tries to figure out who has been getting his team outscore the opponent the most SO FAR. So far. About a quarter of the season.

Golden State has the best record and best point differential so far. It's not surprising that they have two guys at the top.

The interesting thing is, while their offense is elite, they are winning with the top ranked defense.

 

So does that mean Harden is ranked 36th defensively, Beverley 112nd and Jones 61st?

And Jones was an ok defender in his first 4 games against popular belief?

 

RPM is dumb. RAPM is slightly more meaningful.
