Just thought I'd toss this little tidbit out there.. if this has been discussed already, my apologies. 2003-04 ASSIST/TURNOVER RATIO Damon Jones 4.6 Antonio Daniels 4.2 Reggie Miller 4.2 Jason Williams 3.8 Eric Snow 3.5 This box was on the main NBA page at ESPN this morning.. I never knew Damon was that sharp. Now I know this stat may be deceiving, but still, wouldn't it be nice to have someone like that as a backup/possible starter at PG (move SF to the 2 anyone?) Don't know Damon's contract situation, but if he becomes too rich for his current team's blood, and since he has Houston ties, he might be someone we would want to target as a FA or in trade... Wonder if anyone in the Rox org is feeling a bit foolish right about now..?
You mean because Jones was cut and Moochie was kept? Damon's an unrestricted FA playing for his 6th team in as many years.
Of the point guards on teams ahead of us in the standings (for argument's sake)... Gary Payton: 3.3 (team: 1.7) Jason Kidd: 3.2 (team: 1.7) Sam Cassell: 3.0 (team: 1.9) Steve Nash: 3.0 (team: 1.9) Mike Bibby: 3.0 (team: 1.9) Tony Parker: 2.6 (team: 1.4) Jamaal Tinsley: 2.0 (team: 1.4) Chauncey Billups: 2.0 (team: 1.3) Steve Francis: 1.5 (team: 1.1) (Just throwing out more stats. No real motive here.) **updated with team assist/turnover ratio.
I always wonder why not look at the total TEAM assists to the INDIVIDUAL turnovers ratio. In this case, the individual obviously is the point guard. Wouldnt that be more reflective of what that point guard is capable of doing in terms of dictating the offensive flow of the game.
Team assists id the key. And total turnovers. If I pass the ball to you into a double team and you end up getting it stolen or dribble it off your foot you turned it over but really I was a big factor in that. Someone else was open = 1 TO and 0 ASST.

Of course team TO is a major stat, and of course your primary ballhandler will also turn it over a lot (e.g. Jason Kidd leading the league in TO), and of course your assist totals get hurt when you pass to someone who turns it over or misses an open jump shot. But you still want your primary ballhandler to have a good assist-to-TO ratio. 1.5 is fair, at best, for a guard.
