From ESPN's Marc Stein's latest Web Chat. http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=8259 Sprewell, isnt going to take our Veteran's exception and I doubt we would use our MLE on Spree since we need that money to go to a PF. I still think a Wesley for S&T Spree makes the most sense for both teams.
Why wouldn't you want Spree? I think he'd be a huge addition for the Rockets. We get more athletic, an above average defender, and someone who can get off his own shot. It makes perfect sense to me and I'd love to S-n-T for him.
Spree used to be an above average defender and a good athlete. Now he's an almost-35 year old malcontent and has-been who's lost a step.
there was also talk out of minnesota that he was a locker room cancer and a factor is the disapointing finish the t-wolves had this year.
If we sign one more guy 35 or older I think my head will explode. I give JVG all the credit in the world for becoming more flexible last season, but his penchant for older guys or "his guys" isn't going to get us near a ring. I'm hoping Stein is off here. Getting Spree while he's taking a salary cut isn't appealing to me at all after his bs this past year.
I think Spree could be a good addition. Would he be the best possible pick up this off-season, no... but would our team be better w/ him.... yes. There are only so many options after each season... sure, you want to find a diamond in the rough in the draft, and hope that you can plug him in right away... but that doesn't happen very often. Spree would be a bigger, more athletic, version of David Wesley.... and I do believe he still has enough quickness to stay with the Josh Howards and Stackhouse's of the leauge. Plus, JVG would never let him get away w/ the stuff he pulled in Minnesota.... and Spree respects him too much to try it. All I say is that give it a chance... virtually every "move" we made last year, especially the ones where people didn't really approve of (Mutombo, Wesley) ended up paying off. Spree isn't a long-term solution, but then again... we aren't looking for long term solutions. We're looking for guys who can play around the only two players who we should guarantee to be here long-term.
That's debatable! But if we S&T Wesley for Sprewell then Sprewell can get a deal starting around 5M and I doubt anyone else would give him that much. So he will probably have to rough it.
he is an upgrade over wesley. if he takes 3yrs at wesley's salary with a team option on the 3rd year then i would do it. we would still have our MLE for a PG (AD, watson, jaric) and we could trade sura with either baker or mooch for miles. yao-deke jho-miles tmac-draft spree-JB AD-james
I definitely LOVE that line-up, except is Miles a 4? I know he's tall enough to be a 4, but Im assuming you are comparing him to, say, Josh Howard right? Just making sure we are on the same page..
he wouldn't start at the 4 but i like the idea of having someone who can guard marion, odom, etc... and also that gives our opponents a similar miss-match. he is a great perimeter defender (a lot of 4's play the perimeter now) he is a good weakside shotblocker (great for yao) decent rebounder, and can create his own shot. portland wants him gone. they have enough young 3's (outlaw, a couple of euro's). they have said that if they don't get marvin williams they wll take green who can play the 2/3. what they want is a vet point to split time with telfair or cap space. we could give them a little of both (sura and baker). the money is even.
...who still scored more than anyone not named Yao or Tracy on the Rockets as the TWolves' 3rd/4th option. I'm hesitant on a 3 year deal. I'd be ok with 2 years, though. Spree shouldn't be top priority, though.
Smoothie, that's the thinking. My guess is Spree would want 3 years starting at 5M. I would try to make the 3rd year a team option. I mean he will be 38 by then. But for the next two years he could be very serviceable. Certainly an upgrade over Wesley in many areas. I certainly would love to add AD and Miles too.
