The NBA draft is starting to really heat up.

NBA teams are in full workout mode. Some teams are bringing in as many as eight prospects a day a necessity with 108 underclassmen declaring for the draft.

The entire league will descend upon Chicago Tuesday for the NBA pre-draft camp. As soon as it's over, most will be on a plane to Treviso, Italy, to watch many of the top international prospects work out at the Reebok Eurocamp.

During the last 10 days of individual workouts, Insider's been burning up cell phones talking to NBA scouts and general managers to get their thoughts heading into the Chicago pre-draft camp.

    Here's what we've learned:

    Stock up
We've been dogging Arizona State's Ike Diogu and Kansas' Wayne Simien for years because of numerous NBA scouting reports that had them both listed at 6-foot-7 in shoes. NBA scouts hold firm to a threshold that says a player must to be a minimum of 6-foot-8 in shoes to play the power forward position (Charles Barkley notwithstanding). Neither Diogu nor Simien has the perimeter skills to make the transformation to the three, so they've picked up the derogatory "biggie smalls" designation.
Ooops. Our bad. Both players were in Denver May 31 for a workout and a startling truth was uncovered: Both guys are taller than we thought they were.

According to a source inside the Nuggets, Simien measured 6-8 without shoes. NBA teams add another 1¼ inches for shoes, bringing his height up to 6-9¼

Diogu measured 6-foot-7½ in socks, with an amazing 7-foot-4 wingspan. That means he's nearly 6-9 in shoes with the reach of a 7-footer.

Size matters in the NBA, and both players are now tall enough to be considered legit power forwards. In fact, Diogu, because of his wingspan, now figures to be on the tall end of things.

Combine that with feedback from several teams that both players have been excellent in workouts and you can expect both to rocket up the boards in the next few weeks.

Combine Diogu's toughness with a very good skill set, and he's going to look great in these types of workouts. What's surprised people is his shooting. Diogu is known as a guy who works his butt off in the paint. But he's shown teams that he has legitimate NBA 3-point range in workouts. Given a pretty solid handle, his size, toughness and that improving jump shot, Diogu is likely to move up our board big-time the next time our mock draft is released, after the Chicago camp. Based on what we're hearing, he might be a late lottery selection now.

"If a team wants a four who's going to know how to score and rebound in this league," one NBA scout told Insider. "I don't know how they can miss with Ike. After watching him work out, we came away a lot more impressed."

Simien also has been very good. He's not an amazing athlete, but he's shown great skills and polish at every workout. He has the ability to score down low and away from the basket. If his medicals check out at the Chicago physicals (some teams are concerned about a rash of injuries for Simien), he should be able to crack the top 20.

Diogu and Simien aren't the only ones measuring up. Florida's David Lee was 6-8½ without shoes at the same workout in Denver. That puts him at nearly 6-10 in shoes. Lee has also been impressive at all of his workouts, garnering high praise in Phoenix, Utah and Denver for his athleticism, motor and toughness. If he had a jump shot he'd be a lock for the first round. Even without a jumper, some teams in the 20s are saying that he's in the mix.
Spain's Fran Vasquez is putting on a show in his homeland at the moment. While most of the top international prospects are still young and relatively inexperienced, Vasquez is playing a major starting role on his team, averaging 12.6 points and eight rebounds per game in the playoffs for Malaga. He was very good earlier in the week in an elimination game, leading his team in both points (18) and rebounds (11).
Those might not seem like huge numbers for Americans, but in Europe, for someone age 22, they're pretty big.

The Hornets (fourth pick), Jazz (sixth pick), Raptors (seventh pick) and Knicks (eighth pick) are all showing major interest in Vasquez. He should be the first international player off the boards.

Louisville's Francisco Garcia is also playing to rave reviews right now. He has shot lights out in workouts and proven to be a better athlete than originally thought. Teams still worry a little about his body and lateral quickness, but he, too, seems to be a player destined to crack the first round in our next mock draft.
Rashad McCants has gotten his fair share of bad press over the past couple of years. Scouts uniformly rate him, on talent, as one of the 10 best prospects in the draft. But he was such a difficult player to coach in college that red flags have gone up. To make matters worse, he showed up at his first workout in Toronto with a bad case of intestinal illiness.
After the workout, another participant, Julius Hodge, unaware that McCants was ill, ripped into him, saying, "We started the workout, and I was working with Rashad. We were doing shooting drills, and I was hitting everything. I think it was getting discouraging for him and near the end he decided to go to the sidelines in an attempt to say that he was hurt. Once it was found out that he wasn't hurt, he then tried to say he was sick. That was unfortunate; he was free and able to show his stuff, and he shied away from it."

McCants ended up having to sit out the rest of the workout. So why is he on the upside list? Because sources with the Lakers and Clippers watched him work out in Los Angeles just before his trip to Toronto and both came away convinced he'll be gone before they draft at Nos. 10 and 12, respectively.

"That was as good a workout as I've seen," a source on the Lakers told Insider. "He didn't miss. He's a better athlete than we thought. It was just amazing. I know he's got some baggage, but with that much talent, it's tough to see teams passing on him at the end of the day."

Illinois guard Dee Brown looks like he'll be the headliner at the Chicago pre-draft camp. Most of the top prospects are pulling out even Lee and Hodge have withdrawn their names in recent days leaving Brown the guy NBA teams want to see most.
Why? Because Brown is going to get a chance to play the point at the camp, something he wasn't able to do at Illinois with Deron Williams running the show. If he's impressive, his stock will get a nice bump probably into the first round.

Italian big man Angelo Gigli has a name that sounds like a bad movie, but he has received high marks from a couple of NBA teams after workouts. While they say he isn't as athletic as advertised, he measured a legit 7-foot in shoes and was tougher and more skilled than teams had thought. Off the workouts, his name is generating a bit of buzz.
Big man Deji Akindele also has played to strong reviews. He's measuring a legit 7-foot and has tested off the charts athletically. Teams are saying he's smart and picks up things quickly, but he's still pretty raw. He'll also be playing in the Chicago pre-draft camp. If he comes up big there, he'll be another guy who could see his stock really rise.
    Stock down?
It's been a tough couple of weeks for Pittsburgh's Chris Taft. First it was his lackluster workout in New York. Then he went up to Toronto and the normally reserved Rob Babcock wondered aloud about his heart.
"That's the toughest thing to measure," the Raptors GM told the Globe and Mail after the Taft workout. "Even the mind's easier to measure than the heart. It's difficult. It's very difficult.

"I think Chris is still very raw and he would certainly be better served & by going back to school. He has a tremendous amount of potential, there's no doubt. But there's a lot of guys with a great amount of potential. It's what you can do with that and whether you can develop that, that's the key."

Of course, Taft can't go back to school. He's already hired an agent. I wonder if his agent, Billy Ceisler, will now ban Babcock from all of his client's workouts as well.

Combine that with the recent revelations about the actual height of Simien and Diogu, and there's a good chance Taft will be sliding down to the bottom of the first round and maybe even out of it, according to one NBA director of player personnel who claims his team has Taft ranked as the 10th-best power forward in the draft.

Maybe that's why, in the past few days, Taft's agent has reversed course and agreed to start working out Taft for teams in the 20s after insisting to them for weeks that he'd be in the lottery.

High school guard Louis Williams said earlier in the week he won't be attending the University of Georgia and will instead keep his name in the NBA draft. From what we hear, it's a major mistake. Williams was recently destroyed in a workout against Hodge. Afterward, everyone told him he needed to go to college for a minimum of two years. Instead, he went out the next day and said he's staying in the draft. Either he knows something we don't, or he's getting some very bad advice.
Nemanja Aleksandrov has, for the most part, fallen off the radar screen since tearing his ACL earlier in the year. According to his agent, David Bauman, the chances of his playing in the NBA next year are slim. He won't be able to begin playing basketball until December, which means it's likely he'll stay in Europe at least one season to rehab.
Bauman, however, hasn't pulled him out of the draft yet. According to Bauman, Aleksandrov has received a strong nibble from a team in the mid-first round and he and Bauman are trying to decide the best course of action. If he were to recover and play well next year in Europe, his stock would be much higher. However, by agreeing to something now, he would have security.

Neither consideration is primary, according to Bauman: "He just needs to get drafted by the right team. Draft position really doesn't matter. What matters is that a player gets with the right team that believes in him and will do what it takes to develop him. That's the most important thing."

Insider first reported on Thursday that Croatian guard Marko Tomas had signed a five-year deal with Real Madrid. That deal doesn't have an NBA buyout for this season, and the buyout amount is pretty high in Year 2, meaning it's unlikely he'll be in the NBA for at least two more seasons.
While there are a few teams in the mid-to-late first round who are still pondering whether to guarantee him a first-round spot and keep him in Europe, the revelation probably means that Tomas withdraws from the draft.

It's unfortunate for the NBA. As far as international prospects go, he was one of the few who was actually ready to come into the league and play immediately.

    The rest
New Mexico's Danny Granger has played to rave reviews in all of his workouts. But after a recent workout at Golden State, he was sent to the hospital with a serious infection.
Those with a weak stomach probably don't want to read on.

Apparently Granger split the toenail on his big toe several weeks ago and didn't have it checked. Puss started growing under the toenail and Granger decided to remove the toenail himself to clean it out.

The toe kept getting worse and Granger kept slowing down in workouts. After a so-so workout in Golden State, the team's trainer wondered if he was hurt and was shocked to see Granger's toe, which had become seriously infected.

Granger was taken to the hospital. Doctors said that the infection had spread all the way to the bone, and put him on antibiotics. Granger was forced to shut down his workouts while it healed.

However, he won't be out for long. He has a big workout schedule for Thursday in Chicago against Hakim Warrick that's open to all 30 teams.

Deuce, you just beat me to it.

I have seen Ike play a lot, and though I am a Wildcat fan, I think he is a much tougher, better, player than Channing Frye. I am not surprised about his wingpan because he always plays taller than he measures. (I also like Ike better than Turiaf or Villanu despite the other guys height advantage)

I would love to see the Rockets land Simien or Diogu (or Warrick or May). Lot's of good PFs in the draft, a 20ish something PF like one of these might even be able to contribute right away. I would not mind moving up if that is an option.

Article from DraftCity.com. Good read on upcoming draft, who's rising vs. who's falling. Some surprises.

Word on the Street: Rounding Up the Latest Rumors

Vazquez vs. Splitter in ACB Semifinals

The Spanish playoffs brings us two potential top 10 picks going up against each other head to head in a five game series starting tomorrow. There really isnt a whole lot more you could ask for to really help decide which one of the two should get drafted first, unless you put them up head to head in a private workout of course. But how much fun would that be for us?

In terms of having two of the most skilled big men outside the NBA going at it on a huge stage, the Luis Scola vs. Jorge Garbajosa matchup is probably more intriguing, but for NBA scouts (over 20 have already been confirmed) and draft fans, it doesnt get much better than this. Well keep you posted throughout the series. Both Splitter and Vazquez have been in excellent form lately. Tiago is averaging 10 points and 8 rebounds in 26 minutes per game in the playoffs so far, while Fran is coming off a double double (his third straight) with 18 points and 11 rebounds last game to average 12.6 points and 8 rebounds in 31 minutes per game. Check back for updates throughout the week to find out how this fascinating matchup is shaping up.

Antoine Wright living up to the hype

No one has ranked and spoke as highly of Antoine Wright as DraftCity has throughout the season, but it looks like he is beginning to show NBA teams that that wasnt coming out of thin air. A couple of excellent workouts, especially the one a few days ago in Orlando, have given his stock a huge boost, to the point that a spot in the mid-late lottery is now his to lose. One very impressed NBA executive posed a very interested question: what makes Gerald Green THAT much more attractive right now as a prospect that really separates them that much? They are both terrific athletes and they can both shoot the **** out of the ball. Wright is only two years older than him at the end of the day, and you already know what his floor is because hes that damn good already. If Im a GM picking Gerald Green in the top five, Ill really be hoping that he turns out to be as good as Wright is right now in two years time

Petro and Fernandez are on their way

Both Johan Petro and Rudy Fernandezs teams have been eliminated from their domestic leagues playoff series, which means that the NBA draft is now theirs to pursue and conquer.

Fernandez put in his best effort in quite some time in possibly the last game of his career in Spain, scoring 16 points on 4/5 shooting from the field and 8/9 from the line in 28 minutes of action. Those were the most minutes he has played since injuring himself almost four months ago. This was also only the second double digit scoring game hes had in eleven games hes played in since coming back.

Petro on the other hand went out on somewhat of a sour note, languishing on the bench once again in what has become almost too familiar of a site for him as his team was pounded by Strasbourg to finish off their season. Petro played only 6 minutes in his final game in France, and scored 3 points on one shot in the process. The assumption here on Pau Orthezs part appeared to be that its better to hide their NBA prospect from the scouts in the stands rather than advance another stage in the playoffs.

Regardless, Petro will be coming over during the second week of June for private workouts, and has every intention on staying in the draft according to his agent Sam Goldfeder. His buyout is extremely reasonable and will not be a factor in his draft stock.

Wayne Simien flying up draft boards

For a few weeks now weve been hearing about the excellent workouts that Wayne Simien has been having in every city hes worked out in. That really didnt come as a huge surprise, as Simien is clearly one of the most skilled players to be found in this draft, at any position. What did surprise, though, were the rumblings coming out regarding his measurements. Apparently he is indeed measuring out at at least a legit 6-9, and according to one team even taller than that. Weve a hard time believing it ourselves, but this is coming from a number of places so there must be something to it. Perhaps NBA teams want to see it with their own eyes, because he was one of the first players invited for the physicals only portion of Chicago, meaning he will not be attending the draft camp.

Simien is ranked amongst the top 20 prospects, sometimes with plenty of room to spare, on basically every NBA teams draft board weve spoken to. The key here will be the red flags (or hopefully, lack thereof) that will be put on him during the physicals in Chicago. He is not testing out as the greatest athlete ever in private workouts so far, so this is something that is going to be huge for him. Another shocker from the alleged measurements department is Ike Diogus wingspan, which has been sized up from anywhere from 7-3 to 7-5 depending on who you talk to (somehow every team manages to measure them differently, and this really does happen). David Lee at 6-9 is another surprising measurement that has popped up in many conversations as well, as the buzz on him has been quite strong as of late.

Bynum working out for/in front of NBA teams

    Rodger Bohn

DraftCity recently had a chance to catch up with Larry Marshall, Andrew Bynums AAU coach and draft advisor. The 70 high school senior has been training in New Jersey with a personal trainer for approximately five hours a day in preparation for the draft and still does not plan on hiring an agent. The plan for Bynum is still the same in that he will stay in the draft only if they are comfortable that he will be a lottery pick. If the Bynum camp does not have that necessary comfort in regards to his draft stock, they made it clear that he will go to Connecticut and play for arguably the best team in the country.

Marshall confirmed that Bynum will still be having his scheduled June 4th workout at Barouch College in New York City along with 69 Wake Forest junior Eric Williams (who also has not signed with an agent), 610 Illinois senior Jack Ingram, and 68 Louisville senior Otis George. There has been no shortage of NBA interest in this workout apparently, with Marshall stating that approximately 23 teams have confirmed their attendance at this event.

Following his private workout on the 4th, Andrew will be heading to Chicago, but only to partake in the physical examination and combine testing. We will be going to Chicago, but Andrew will not be playing or conducting any workouts there, Marshall told DraftCity. He then went on to tell us that Bynum is still planning on doing his scheduled workout on June 18th, and also has private workouts lined up with Atlanta, Portland, New Orleans, and New York.

Chris Taft continues to drop like a rock

After reportedly stinking up the entire city of New York with the workouts he held over the past two weeks, Chris Taft has decided to take his show on the road. The latest stop was at Golden State yesterday, for an intimate meeting with Ike Diogu. The results, according to a person that was in the gym, were not pretty to watch. Basically Diogu scored on Taft repeatedly...again and again and again, until things started to get embarrassing. On the opposite side of the ball, Diogu stopped Taft in his tracks repeatedly and thoroughly handed it to him. Things got so bad and Taft got so down on himself (again, in the opinion of this eye witness) that people thought he would just quit the workout. That never happened, but it was supposedly close.

Torontos general manager Rob Babcock, who got an up close and personal look at Taft, suggested earlier in the week that he would certainly be better served by going back to school. Unfortunately thats just not really an option for Taft at this point, as hes already hired an agent, New York City based Billy Ceisler, and forfeited any college eligibility he had remaining. If he had another season playing the way he did this past year, he probably would have zero shot at going in the first round anyway, so as sad as it sounds he appears to have made the right choice.

    Missing in action

There are a couple of names who have been conspicuously absent from reports we have received so far from participating players and NBA teams in private workouts so far. Channing Frye, Martell Webster and Sean May are three players who NBA teams still havent been able to track down for private workouts. All are clients with the same SFX agency.

According to reports, Frye was working out in Chicago at Tim Grovers gym and would not play in the many 5 on 5 pickup games that are organized there a couple of times a week. While I still havent managed to track down one person who doesnt believe that he has a guarantee in the top 10, I would still be absolutely shocked if that ended up happening on draft night. Ignoring the obvious fact that these rumors are thrown out every single year (Kirk Snyder to Utah at 14, Sergei Monya to Utah at 14, Martynas Andriuskevicius to Phoenix at 7, half the draft with their mothers included to Boston just to name a few from last year) and almost never turn out to be true, promises like that are rarely handed out this early on (this has been out there even before the lottery was conducted), especially not to NCAA seniors.

Just to make sure that I am not missing the boat on anything here, I went back to watch four tapes I have here of Channing Frye from the regular season. Those games were: against Utah, @ Washington, @ Arizona State, and against Washington in the Pac-10 finals. There were many others on television this year as well. Nothing in those games indicated to me that Frye even deserves consideration in the top 20. He looked to be extremely frail and narrow, and without too much potential to add weight. Not even one player Ive spoken with who has gone up against him in the past (he was amongst many potential first rounders at the Nike Camp last summer) will question the fact that is incredibly soft, too prone to drift outside of the paint in key stretches of the game and often looks as if he is allergic to any rebound that wont fall directly into his hands. The biggest problem with Frye is that he is nowhere close to being a difference maker for his team at the college level, despite his size. Too often he gets caught into 8-10 minutes where he just goes through the motions and appears to be in the game in spirit only, only being recognizable because of the fact that he is basically three inches taller than anyone else in his conference.

Someone could probably draft him high enough because he is almost 7 feet tall, but to waste such a high pick on a player who has shown the potential throughout his college career to be nothing more than a nice backup tweener big man to add to your rotation seems like a huge reach. Probably even more of a reach than Araujo last year. The fact remains that the only thing that has changed between him being a borderline first rounder two months ago and a supposed top ten pick right now is him hiring Kobe Bryants agent, Rob Pelinka, to represent him.

    Stock also on the rise:

Julius Hodge- If the NBA kept stats on who has worked out for the most teams, Hodge would be leading the pack by a huge margin so far. Everyday you hear about a new workout he was at, and almost every prospect seems to have matched up with him already. Hodge apparently has been looking good so far, showing off his excellent ball-handling and dominating workouts thanks to his competitiveness and the way he carries himself on the court. His jumpshot and extremely narrow frame are turnoffs, but many teams appear to have him ranked in the top 25 on their board regardless.

Joey Graham- Keep your eyes open for an article that was written following a private workout that DraftCity attended a few days ago.

    Orien Greene- Ditto.

Luther Head- Shooting the lights out and reminding people just how excellent of an athlete he is. A strong camp in Chicago, with point guard skills included, could conceivably push his stock into the late 1st, early 2nd round.

Will Conroy- Hes been getting quite a few workouts apparently and has been surprising people with his athleticism and a better than advertised outside stroke. Conroy can also really help himself in Chicago with a strong camp.

Nate Robinson- If there is an NBA scout or executive out there who thinks that Robinson wont be in the league next year, I have yet to meet him. This guy wont back down from anybody.

Matt Walsh- You either love him or you hate him, and Walsh appears to be traveling strictly to the places that love him, as thats been the only feedback so far. The lack of pure shooting guards with his size (6-6) could really help him on draft night. Dont be shocked to even see someone reach for him to make sure that he doesnt get snatched up before they can get their hands on him.

Jason Maxiell- Could possibly be the toughest player in this draft. Everyone loves his athletic ability and the fact that he appears to have a pretty nice stroke from mid-range. Another guy who will surely be in the league for a while, with the only question being how early he will be off the board. Chicago could treat him well if he has a PG like he had in Portsmouth (Will Conroy) next to him.

    Stock not on the rise:

Ronny Turiaf- He most certainly isnt a workout type player, as his skill level just isnt that high enough to stand out in any particular area against the extremely deep power forward class in this years draft. Right now he is losing a lot of ground because of average workouts, but he could bounce back with an excellent showing in Chicago.

Eddie Basden- Another example of a player who just isnt cut out for these type of workouts, as his poor shooting and ball-handling leave him very limited options to put the ball in the basket in one on one and two and two settings. Luckily for him, the NBA doesn't draft solely off workouts.

Kennedy Winston- Winston actually has all the tools needed in the world to look fantastic in workouts, but he just cant seem to put things together. Refuses to put the ball on the basket and finish strong at the hoop, settling for fadeaway jumpers once again as he showed a tendency to do during the season. The word soft almost seems to come up with him.

I'm sorry to hear that Simien and Diogu are taller than believed. I was definitely interested in picking up either of them, and now I think they're out of our range. One of them could still be there with the Memphis pick, but oh well.

I'd also been coming around to Garcia.

I've sort of cooled somewhat to Turiaf, but maybe he'd still be a good pickup, and it sounds like he'll still be there at 24.

Then again; usually a lot of stuff you hear right now is bull/misinformation. What do you guys think?

Personally, I would think hard about passing up on Chris Taft if he did fall to the bottom of the first round. However, I probably would pass on him for two reasons:

    1) Sometimes there are reasons a players drops like a stone. Yeah, I remember what happened with Rashard. But there was also Loren Woods (remember him?) He was expected to go lottery and the T-Wolves were able to pick him up with their second-round pick. He never materialized though. Sometimes, especially when dealing with attitude, you have to pass, even if the talent is there. If Taft just doesn't care, it will be hard to motivate him to care, and unless he cares, he'll never amount to anything.

    2) This is not a team that can turn troubled young players around. JVG doesn't appear to like rookies as a general rule and also seems to have little ability or inclination to help young players in need of help (say, Eddie Griffin). If Taft is immature, he's not going to take well to a no-nonsense coach like JVG.

Yeah it somewhat saddens me to hear that Ike and Simmien's stocks are rising but more power to them anyway.

The good news is that the top of the first round is still very crowded and we could still end up with either of them or even Jarret Jack or Joey Graham.

Talking about Taft, I suspect he will fall to late first round since Splitter, Vasquez, Villanueva, Blatche, Petro, Ike, Simmien and company have been doing well so far or at least holding steady. Physically he still is arguably the best of the lot but from what I have seen of him (in numerous games for Pitt) I came away really dissapointed at the lack of effort and will to stamp his impression on each game. He was so Vanilla....almost as soft as Jello (I cannot think of a player to liken his softness to). He could still make it as a pro but it will not come until he "gets it" and puts it all together (i.e. mentally, emotionaly and physically).

I know the main article I posted was on PFs but I wouldnt be surprised if JVG/CD decide to draft the best available "swingman" at #24 and then try to shore up the PF spot via Free Agency / Trades.

I would agree with this route. a guy like garcia would be perfect. he can backup the 3, then when JB retires he can backup both 3 and 2. he is a good shooter, passer, and ball handler (no jokes please):p

winston seems like a good fit as well.

I'm all for getting Garcia with the 24th pick too. Simien and Diogu seem to be out of reach. Garcia is a good defender and can score as well. He is listed at 6'7" and could play at both the SF and SG spots as a backup where we need help.

Making it sound more and more useful to try and pull a trade with a team like Memphis for Bonzi, thier pick for our pick and the TE or an expiring contract type thing.

I'm still not really really high on Bonzi, but that gets you a chance at a top 20 talent, and gets you a taller backcourt player and you keep the MLE.

That's a great idea Jay... I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'm not sold on Bonzi wells being a good team player, but he's had a couple of years to get used to not being the main option and most players seem to like the idea of playing in Houston, so he'd probably be pretty valuable as a backup or even starter. And having the 19th pick would mostl likely get us a PF like May, Diogu, Simien or even Warrick. Of course if we got Wells in a trade I wouldn't really wanna pick up a swingman in the draft.

Don't count the Rockets out of the Semiem Diogu race just yet. Jonathan Feigen says they have the assests to move up if there is a player they love. It seems a lot of teams with stacked rosters and cap issues are willing to trade down and take players they can stash in Europe for a couple of years.

    Trade talk coming

With NBA scouts and general managers heading to Chicago this week for the annual predraft camp, expect trade speculation to increase dramatically.

This always happens when such gossips get together, but this season, there is more to talk about.

The draft seems exceptionally deep, roughly between picks 20 and 45, unless too many players withdraw from the draft. Because of that, more teams seem interested in moving down, as in an NFL draft, than in most seasons.

Much of the talk will center initially on teams overstocked at the same positions — Memphis, Boston, New York and especially Portland.

The Trail Blazers, with the third pick of the draft and with Sebastian Telfair in place at point guard, will likely have to take a forward. But they have the high-priced Darius Miles and hugely talented Travis Outlaw at small forward, with Zach Randolph taking loads of shots at power forward.

Memphis has had trouble finding playing time for its past first-rounders. The Celtics loaded up with rookies last season. The Knicks have a roster full of power forwards and ridiculously bloated contracts.

The Rockets will be in the middle of conversations because they have a trade exception worth about $2.4 million from the Tracy McGrady trade that will expire June 30.

But the Rockets will not feel pressure to make a move with that exception because they will also have a mid-level exception to spend, and the next collective bargaining agreement could require that the mid-level exception be split and used on two players.

The Rockets also have trade exceptions worth $1.1 million and $1.3 million.

Didn't see that Feigen excerpt. It's good to hear we might still be able to use that exception and move up in the draft if necessary.

FWIW, I've read that Splitter might pull out of the draft because of issues related to his contract with his existing team. Although not that big a deal, it's something that could impact who's available at the 24.

I like Diogu, but realistically, he'd probably pull out of the draft if he were likely to be in our range. We probably have a better shot at him if he believes he's moving up.
