BEIJING -- Yao Ming has declared his foot injury a non-issue ahead of August's World Championship warm-up games against America and Brazil in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.

    AP Photo
Special Olympian Wu Fangmiao, left, receives a basketball from Yao Ming on Friday in Beijing.
"As to my injury, I don't have any major concerns. Everything's going really smoothly," Yao told reporters at a news conference on Friday.

The 7-foot-5 NBA All-Star broke his left foot playing for Houston Rockets on April 11, putting in doubt his participation in basketball's international showpiece starting in Japan on Aug. 19.

Wearing a pair of starched-white basketball sneakers and walking without a trace of discomfort, Yao said there were no worries about his recovery.

"Do I look like a guy with a foot injury?" he asked.

Yao's comments followed his appearance at a press conference launching a series of public service announcements promoting the Special Olympics to be held in his hometown, Shanghai, in 2007.

As a Special Olympics ambassador, Yao said he was happy to make a contribution to the Games.

"Society cares for me and I care for society," he said.

man i wish he wouldn't play WC's, but i always guessed he would. He's way too nice to his home country.

just hoping he gets through ok and intact for a tilt at turning our fortunes around in 06/07.

I still don't see what the big deal is with him playing in the WC's. Is a few extra weeks of basketball in the summer really going to ruin his season?

Yao has finely gotten his mean streak he is a bad mutha shut yo mouth to quote the baddest man alive aka Shaq. I am one of those rare fans that likes both Yao and Shaqzilla but i think Yao is slightly better at this point in his carrer but i do not know if Yao will ever be more dominant than Shaq was in his prime.

Probably not more dominant in the physical sense but he definitely has more moves and a nicer shooting touch then Shaq AND he hits almost 90% from the line :D

I think last year was a blessing in disquise and a light bulb went off in Yao's mind after watching those DVD's of his games whil recovering from the toe infection. I think he came to the realization that he was his worst enemy and if he played smarter and was a bit more assertive that NOBODY in the league could stop him.

yao is easily more skilled than shaq. the only thing that made shaq so good is his weight and strength. it's difficult not to do well when you can bump ppl out of the way. yao is all skill. i consider that a better player.

We all love your updates, pryuen, it's just that there's no real bashing to be done in your thread so most of us are speechless. ;)

I agree, and for me this is the biggest excitement of the season. Last year, Yao cleary figured out "Hmm, yep, looks like I CAN dominate these fools." Before last season, he didn't KNOW if he could do it. Now that he knows he can, he's DEFINITELY going to feel a heavy responsibility to perform up to the level he now knows he's capable of. I firmly believe we're going to see a true monster.

Pryuen, as stated many times before, we appreciate all the work and effort you put into bringing us news of Yao and his activities et al. Keep up the good work. Just because threads like this are created or get responses does not mean that we don't appreciate your work.

I agree..before he broke his foot he was dominating, he was UNSTOPPABLE Finally. And what was even better was that he was getting better then the broken foot...He'll dominate this year maybe even be a MVP Candidate...
