Archive All season long the Rockets have been pointing to today. They had essentially the toughest schedule in the NBA to this point, and somehow managed to stay above .500 with a roster many picked for the cellar.

From January 7 forward, the schedule gets much easier for Houston, and the team has long expected that today marks the day they'll start climbing into a meaningful place in the Western Conference playoff picture.

Except for one thing. The team is not feeling good. They're on a three-game losing streak, and worse, their starting unit simply has been ineffective of late. Daryl Morey has said the starters need to change their approach, and Rick Adelman and Shane Battier agree. Here's what they told Rockets.com's Jason Friedman:

“We’re not playing the way we’ve talked about playing,” says Adelman. “We’ve walked the ball up the court. We need five people running up and down the court and we’re not doing it. We’ve got to change that. We can’t have one group playing one way and then the next group playing different.”

Adds Battier:“We’ve had slippage in the chemistry department. You can just tell by the way we play. We haven’t been as unified at both ends of the court. You can say that with pretty good confidence because the second group that comes in, the guys off the bench, have great chemistry. They play together, they move the ball, they space the floor and they rely on each other to play good basketball.

“I think the tendency for the first group right now is to really try to do it themselves and try to carry the team out of the slump. We’re not doing it out of malicious reasons; every guy feels that they can help the team and raise the level of play. But we’ve gotten away from trying to do it collectively instead of individually and it’s resulted in some pretty bad basketball.”

Well isn't it funny that I JUST said that in another thread.

    Amazing.

I really think that practice will help them get back in the groove... at least I hope that is the case.

I have been one to say give Ariza some time and be patient. This really does seem like a little shot at ariza though

I was about to make a statement about Ariza when I posted the article but I thought it might be a knee jerk reaction to the blog...keep in mind that I actually like Ariza, others may not be so kind lol

Yeah, that's in Shane's quotes on rockets.com, too.

As poorly as Ariza has been shooting/playing, I am actually more worried about his attitude these days. He doesn't seem to be getting along with guys and overall seems pretty frustrated not only at his own play, but others' play as well. Brooks gets frustrated too, but it's usually at the referees not his teammates.

I still think Ariza can develop the skills to be a pretty good player as I've seen flashes of what is possible, but if he has the wrong attitude to be on this team which is incredibly team-oriented, I think he needs to go. We'll see.

    We'll be fine.

It's not like we're on a three game losing streak after playing the Nets, TWolves, and GSW.

We lost to the Hornets, Lakers, and Suns (1 decent team, and 2 of the best in the west).

I think we just need to practice some more, and look at tape of the gawd-awful Ariza.

Adelman should realize that this is NOT the time for Ariza to play himself out of a slump. The team, yes...Ariza, not so much.

I thik Ariza is the problem.

He's more effective when he's not having a 'lead' role mentality. He's trying too hard that sometimes produces bad results or great ones, but inconsistently. He's becoming a mediocre Tmac offensively, but defensively he's consistently good.

I have a trade idea ... let's trade T-MAC and Ariza for some talent WITH height!

Are you sure not a shot at Brooks as well? His Ast/TO ratio has been horrible, 10 assists with 12 TOs in last 3 games, not getting teammates involved enough.

Clearly they are talking about Trevor......everyone else is doing their job......Trevor is the one stopping the ball, calling for it too often and driving into the trees with nowhere to go.

But it's not only Trev that's stopping the ball. Aaron and Luis are doing it too. Plus they are walking it up and then standing around again... which was supposed to be something they were NOT doing since Tmac has left the building.

Oh no, we lost IN LA and in AZ on a back to back... It would be different if we lost to the nets and after a day rest lost to the wolves, but come on... Im not worried in the least, and I doubt very many people in Houston are.

Maybe so, but when he and Landry are the only ones consistently putting the ball in the hole right now is that really fair? I agree Brooks needs to improve in these areas, but when the first unit is struggling right now we need him shooting. 11-22 and 6-12 3pt last night suggests to me he needs to be shooting

You know what's funny about this? When JVG talked about his style of basketball he said you can't get everyone to buy into the running game all the time and it looks like he's right. Guys get tired and they want to play half court.

Saying Ariza is the cause of all the Rockets problems is crazy he's a key part of the team maybe he should've avoided the #1 on his jersey he's getting the T-mac treatment way to much.

shane battiers translation: when trevor comes out of the game, the chemistry gets better and the team plays better.
