I watched the NFL Tonight show (or whatever ESPN's pre MNF show is called) and Dan Patrick and Sean Salisbury seem to think that if USC wins the Rose Bowl and the Texans lose out, Pete Carroll may very well follow Reggie Bush right to the Texans. Their reasoning being that what else does Carroll have to prove at USC if he wins 3 straight MNC's? Plus unlike most college coaches, he has NFL head coaching experience.
He is an offensive minded coach and not a conservative guy like the rest of the coaching staff. Lots of great coaches out there, so teh Texans should have a large crop to choose from. Wonder how Vince Young and UT will feel if both Carroll and Bush are in his hometown.
Carroll came up as a DB coach and defensive coordinator, don't know how you consider that offensive minded.
Pete Carroll hasn't worked on the offensive side of the ball since 1983. He was almost exclusively a defensive coach coming up through the ranks. I think we'd be making a mistake hiring Carroll - I think that NFL teams make mistakes by simply hiring college coaches who've won a lot of games without looking to make sure that the skills that make him succesful in college will equal success in the pros. Carroll was pretty mediocre at New England last time - but then again, Belichik was mediocre at Cleveland. . .
Thats what I do on PS2. Win a few Rings than follow my best player into madden I dont see Carrol leaving. He can stay at USC and be considered a legend or come to Houston and if hes not winning by year 3 he could be gone. As a Texan fan I wouldnt mind having Carrol but I'd much rather entice JJ out of retirement.
There seems to be a glut of offensive minded coaches floating around.. Mooch, Carroll, Fassell, Martz.. Who are the defensive coordinators/coaches we could snag?
I wouldn't say it's a rumor at all, it just got brought up by Dan Patrick as a reason of picking Bush. If true, I don't think it would be a wise choice. College coaches don't make it in the NFL all that often, Carroll, although a good coach, would be no exemption. The Texans are in a desperate situation, the honeymoon is completely over and they need to find a way to win at least 8 games next season before fans really lose it. The Texans don't have the luxury of experimenting with the college coach to NFL thing. There are plenty of NFL coaches out there that have the experience needed to change this franchise around. The Texans don't have the lu
He coached in NE before he went to USC. To be fair, the first year he was the Patriots coach, they did make it to the playoffs. The next year, they went 9-7 and lost in the wild-card matchup. I personally wouldn't want Carroll as the next Texans coach. Call me crazy, but I bet Mariucci would be a better fit. I am pretty sure David Carr or Matt Leinart or Vince Young can grasp the WCO a lot better than Joey Harrington did.
His good thing/s are leaving... Returning the pros after a threepeat in college has got to be the move you make. There is nothing , NOTHING, left to prove at USC.
^ Ya, USC has been a recruiting machine as of late. But there's a decent chance he might leave for the NFL after this season (if there is the demand). Leinart and Bush are gone, even though their recruiting class is good, it's going to take him two or three seasons before he's competing for another title. Plus, there is the money, he's got the chance to make 4-5M per season, hard to pass that up.
People said the same thing after Carson Palmer went to the NFL. Sure enough Matt Leinart stepped in and led the Trojans to a national championship and is on the verge of adding another one. USC currently has the top rated high school quarterback recruit from last year waiting to take Leinart's spot. They are absolutely loaded with talen that can easily step in and fill the void from players leaving for the NFL. Also, many have pointed out that Carroll really likes his job now and could stay simply because he enjoys it, regardless of the NFL dollar signs.
Carroll was talked about regarding the Texans again this morning on Mike & Mike. They were saying that he had an opportunity at the NFL last year when he was offerred the 49ers job, and he turned it down because he didn't like what he saw from their ownership. They said most coaches would LOVE to play for Bob McNair and be a part of his organization...so they were speculating that might end up being a good fit.
John Clayton and Chris Mortenson were talking this morning on the Mike and Mike show. They also said it's a rumor that Carroll would come to the Texans if he is given the power and money to run the squad. They said coaches would love to play for an owner like McNair. Maybe Carroll can fix our crap OL by recruiting his USC OL in the draft? {dreaming} Man, if Bush and Carroll come to the Texans, things would get reaaaaaally interesting!
I know there hasn't been a good track record of college coaches coming to the NFL. But has any college football coach done what Carroll managed to do? USC was pathetic the few years before he went. And he turned it around remarkably quickly. The guy had what, 3 losses in the last 4 years? His team is favored for a college football three-peat, something almost unthinkable. If the Texans were to choose a college coach, Carroll's the best choice. Hi previous pro-coaching experience wasn't that bad. He had the tough task of following Bill Parcells at NE, and was decent there with a couple of winning seasons.
