I was browsing through my routine cycle of ClutchFans, YahooSports, ESPN / Truehoop, Basketbawful and found a interesting little roundtable from our lovely friends at ESPN. Debated if this year was the demise of the triumvirate of Spurs, Mavs, and Suns and the beginning of a new trio of elite in the West: Lakers, Jazz, and Hornets.

Lakers, Jazz, and Hornets: the new triumvirate of the West?!? I think I'm in denial here... but I can't even begin to accept the mere thought of those teams being the top 3 in the West. Is it just me?? I agree with the Lakers and POSSIBLY the Hornets but, I completely disagree with the Jazz being on that list. I think they are a GOOD team but not one of the elite.

This is such a bold prediction seeing how competetive the Western Conference is. The Spurs are still in the top 3, no doubt. Dallas: as happy as I was to see them fail this season... I believe a coaching change will bring a fresh face and they will see improvements. They simply just stopped listening to Avery..

Finally, I liked how many of them gave the Rockets props as the team most likely to join the West's elite. With a healthy Yao and Tmac, Scola and Landry after a year of experience, and our continuing improvement under Adelman... it's not bold at all to say that we can be apart of the "triumvirate"

I have talk about the Jazz here. They are a good team. Consistent at home. Execution. They are good. But they are way overrated. Yes they are the most physical team in the NBA. At the same time, they have the softest interior of any western conference playoff teams. Offensively Boozer is genuinely good, but not that good. He is a product of the system. He cant take control, play outside the offense, put the team on his shoulders. Williams is the only bonafide superstar on that team and I think that offense actually shackles him at times. That Utah Jazz team will NEVER represent the western conference in the finals. Not with its current makeup.

Only elite teams have losing road records like Jazz.

Its going to Lakers, Hornets, Portland, and Rockets (if we stay healthy) next year.

The Lakers and NO will stay near the top, and I think NO is right with them. Great young cores for the most part. Excellent contract situations too.

We should remember Utah is the 5th seed for 2 years in a row. They got a really lucky draw last year in getting GS in the 2nd round and this year Houston w/o Yao. Not for a 2nd would I have favored Utah over SA or Phx this year. Dallas could have given them trouble too.

Barring injury next year I expect NO, LA, SA & Hou to be at the top, in no particular order. Utah hasn't proven they are anything more than a 2nd tier, they do after all have the worst defense of the top. I think Phx potentially could be a better defensive team than the Jazz too, if they can find a away to harness Amare and Shaq's size/strength/quickness into a strong interior defense. Dallas is also only 1 season away from what, 67 wins, I wouldn't count them out with a tweak of the roster and fresh outlook. The Kidd trade was a big mistake though--Harris gave them a lot of athleticism and scoring efficiency from the PG spot, not to mention a guy who could make Paul/Williams work more than most.
