Barkley admits huge losses, big gains while gambling
    Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley admits he has a gambling problem, but said Monday that he's several thousand dollars richer after returning from Las Vegas.

In an interview with Phoenix television station KTVK, Barkley said he won "about $700,000" over the weekend.

"That was all profit [from] blackjack and I bet on the Super Bowl. I had the Colts," Barkley added. "I played a lot of blackjack."

Barkley did not say how much he bet on Sunday's game in which Indianapolis beat the Chicago Bears 29-17 in Miami.

In an ESPN interview in May 2006, Barkley estimated that he'd lost about $10 million gambling over the years.

He said Monday that he lost $2.5 million "in a six-hour period" one night last year.

"It's a stupid, bad habit. I have a problem," Barkley said of his gambling. "But the problem is when you can't afford it. I can afford to gamble. I didn't kill myself when I lost two and half million dollars … I like to gamble and I'm not going to quit."

Barkley, who lives in the Phoenix area, was elected to the Hall of Fame last year.

He averaged 22.1 points and nearly 12 rebounds in a 16-year career that included stops in Philadelphia, Phoenix and Houston. He was the league's MVP in 1993 with the Suns, and he won gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as part of the original U.S. Dream Team.

This is old news... Everyone knows Barkley has a gambling problem; he's talked about it plenty of times.

    Barkley is no great rocket!

He's a former Rocket, stop y'er whining. Personally, I think he's a great Rocket. He took a huge pay cut to play for us, and I loved those old Hakeem/Clyde/Charles teams. The experiment never bore fruit, but it was fun.

Say what you want about Chuck, but don't treat him like he's Pippen.

If Barkley wasn't a great Rocket than no one is. He played with heart, and he played smart. He was huge for the Rockets, especially in the playoffs. 23.5/13.18 in '99 and 17.9/12.0 in '97. He had his priorities straight when it came to baskeball, and he was great with the fans. He was also one of the best interviewers ever, so that counts for something. I'll always love Chuck for what he gave to the franchise while he played here. I can't stand it when he doesn't give the Rockets the credit or respect they deserve on TNT, but they'll be shutting him up in the playoffs this year and for years to come.

And, he took down Shaq once as a Rocket, and I was there to see it. One of the most classic moments of his career. You gotta love 'em.

Charles had pretty good numbers while he was with the Rockets. 12.21 REB/3.93 APG/1.08 SPG/16.49 PPG/2.42 TO in 35 minutes, shooting over 48% and over 70% at the line. True, it was only for 183 games, and he couldn't stop himself from hoisting up threes, but I'd take him at the 4 spot on this team in a heartbeat. Great? Don't know that I would go that far, not while he was with the Rocks, but damned good.

And he wants to run for the governor?

If I had 2.5 mil to spare on blackjack, I would rip the house open. Chucky clearly needs some brian on blackjacking just like his commentating.

hooray for the new guys trying to get this thread moved. It's in the right place.. former Rocket, not in the NBA anymore.

Anyway, I like this for Barkley. He knows he has a problem, and he knows he can afford it. It's not the healthiest or most prudent thing in the world, and we all know better things can be done with the money...but hey, we all have our problems..

    Chuck was a great Rocket.
While the other Rocket said the new uniforms (the pajamas) were good just to be nice for Les,
Chuck was the 1st to say that were horrible and he kept mentioning over and over and over again. On TNT too.

Thanks to Chuck, we have nicer uniforms.

Barkley is right. It's only a problem if you can't afford it. It's no different than guys playing poker for nickles/dimes with friends.

blowing $10million+ on gambling is a problem regardless of how much money you have. compare those $10 mil with $10 mil deke doles out.

i love barkley, but to waste that kind of money while getting on mj's case for not tackling pressing social issues is hypocritical. it's tough to give credence to any serious comment from someone living in lala-land where wasting money is acceptable

Personally I don't think he's a "great" Rockets player. But one thing is for sure, he is a nightmare for sportsbook managers. Especially for dumb managers.

Several years ago during SB weekend, Barkley was playing at one casino and went to make some big bets on the game. He made the bets with credit that the manager thought he had with the casino. Problem was he didn't have any credit there and the manager voided the tickets when he found out he wasn't even staying at the casino, let alone no credit.
Barkley won his bets (from what I understand it was in the low 6 figure range)
and raised hell when he found out that that the tix were voided.

The manager was fired, Barkley got his money and is persona non grata there from what I was told. (I heard all this from my superiors who knew the manager and worked with him for over 10 years).

Another former basketball player (Dale Davis) is also banned from one casino for not giving his ID when he was asked for it, because he didn't want to pay taxes on his winnings.
