Man, I think they must have something against the Rocks and Yao Ming. I just watched the halftime show on ESPN. They said Yao had a horrible debut. They showed 1 clip of him when Bender did the baseline spin, said Yao immediately got schooled the first time in the game, and then started comparing his first game stats to other #1 picks first games. What made me mad was that they said "He had NO points and only 2 rebounds, a terrible first game and then said nothing else afterward. They made NO mention of the fact that he barely got any minutes in the game. Anyone that didn't watch the game would think that he played 30-35 minutes and went 0-12 from the field and got dominated. That was so misleading the way they made it sound. Also, no mention of Stevie's 39. They showed the one clip where Artest stripped him on the inbounds and another where he hurt himself going for the dunk. ESPN really, really blows.
I don't even listen to Ming Haters. No Matter what he will do, they will always have something negative to say.
Yes, he did have a terrible first game. Did they lie? Not saying that he won't improve, but his first game wasn't a good one. Compared to the other rookies' stats that they put up, he didn't do well.
After the game recap on ESPN.... Stuart Scott said, "Don't worry, Yao will bring it." Meaning, GIVE HIM SOME TIME. ESPN know that a lot of players are trying to indoctrinate Yao. They aren't saying that Yao is bust or anything like that.
Yeah, he could score 39 points in a loss, and they'd be telling him to pass more or something.........
The media can make a rainstorm into a hurricane. That's what they get paid to do. They inflate and deflate stories. But I like that sometimes. It' keeps me entertained. Wait until they jump on his bandwagon next year. Same thing happened to Kwame.
Yes Ming had a bad first game. Like rfrocket said but how about showing minutes played? Seems like a missleading comparison to me.
I was watching SportsCenter just now. They were comparing his stats to other then rookie centers. Anyway...they abbreviated his name as: Y. Ming when comparing him to the likes of S. O'Neal M. Olawakhandi and others. They are idiots.
No, they didn't lie. There is such a thing as deception by omission. There is a BIG difference between playing the whole game and having 0 points and 2 rebounds and not even playing 1 full quarter and only taking 1 shot. I've never been big on conspiracy theories or the sort. I certainly don't think they're intentionally trying to make Yao look bad nor do I think they should try to prop him up undeservedly. I do however think that some of the media has byass(conscious or not) sometimes towards or against certain teams and/or players(just like refs...ie Joey Crawford). My only point of contention was that they didn't say Yao only played limited minutes, just that he had 0 points and 2 rebounds. Any way you slice it, that was misleading. I guess I've just grown tired of all the lame witticisms and terrible journalism that ESPN puts forth night after night. They actually make Kenny, Charles, and Ernie look good. And that takes a lot.
Wow, check out ESPN's front page. They actually mentioned Yao and MJ together. "Better Days Ahead" "Things will get better for Yao Ming and Michael Jordan. Yao, Houston's 7-foot-6 No. 1 draft pick from China, had a quiet NBA debut (two rebounds, two turnovers) in the Rockets' 91-82 loss to the Pacers, while MJ played one of his worst games in the Wizards' ugly 74-68 loss to the Raptors. Jordan scored eight points in 24 minutes, none in the second half, and clanged a dunk attempt."
Wouldn't being on someone's nuts be a bad thing? I know that whenever I am sleeping on the couch, if my dog accidentally rests his leg on MY nuts, I am not happy about it.
Yep! Saw it. They know it. This will motivate Yao to play harder and train harder next year! I really can't understand why Yao will WANT to play in the Asian games again. It's like playing in the pee-wee league. No challenge. http://msn.espn.go.com/main.html
If you're really pissed about what ESPN had to say...they win. They're job is to stir up controversy OR positive vibes. If you feel either way and talk about what they said they win because you'll keep watching because people love to complain...and your friends will watch. If you are indifferent to what they say...then they lose out.
one thing you have to realize about espn's/national coverage of yao's first game is this. . . there IS a great deal of national interest in how he does. which means that they knew before the game was played that they were going to devote some time in the evening wrap-up to his performance. the performance, by anyone's objective standards, was not a good one. are there lots of justifying factors? sure. but you can't expect espn to be all apologizing for him. if he'd have scored 50 last night, they'd have been going on about how great his nuts are. rightly or wrongly, a great deal of attention is going to be paid to him. eddie griffin should buy him a sandwich today for taking the heat off of his awful night last night.
